We were told on tuesday that the school would open at 10, got there and was sent away as now shut. by the time we walked the 1/2 hour walk home, with dd in tears as she was falling over so much as it was just ice on the pavements, we had a text saying the school was now open!!! Phoned the school and was told that as it was open i was expected to get the kids there! There was no chance I was walking the kids to school again with all that ice so we stayed at home. I didnt mind being sent away after walking there, i objected to walking home and then being told i had to go back!

I am certain that if the schools had the system of Snow Days like they have in America and Canada fewer would close. A day closed that is then taken off the Christmas Holidays would I am sure encourage everyone to make more effort to get to school and ensure that the premises is safe for students.

Sorry, but this isn't the case. I used to live in Ohio and we never had a day taken off any of the holidays, but we did have plenty of snow days.

Now that is madness. I'd have been cross at that as well. I say you did right. :D

Schools usually close due to not being able to get a fire engine or ambulance onto the school grounds - Im sure that there would be even more of an uproar if something happened to the little darlings and the emergency services could not attend the pupils!

If you have children chances are at some point in winter you'll have to cope with snow and school have tough decisions to make. Our daughter went yesterday, an hour after arriving the snow came. First text was that out of school wouldn't operate so we knew she would be finishing at 3.10, the next text was that children could be collected from 12.

I had to leave, but couldn't get my car out so it was a packed train to get to my wife's office - a points failure meant it would have been a long wait for the next train, we then walked a mile to school, picked up daughter who walked half the distance home then was on my shoulders for the next half.

If school had kept open I would probably have had to stay at work as all buses and trains were stopped at about 2pm, my wife would have had to walk to school in a foot of snow, but she couldn't carry my daughter so how would they have got home?

We were both inconvenienced, but school called it right.
  • Yesterday morning I listened intently from to the local radio 6am til 8.15 for news on school closures and was poised on the local council's website too. Our school wasn't mentioned on either so I got the kids dressed up and we trekked up to school to find not a soul there!
As i [STRIKE]walked[/STRIKE] waded home I saw a friend who had just had a phone call from the Head saying it was shut ([sarcasm]No! Really?[/sarcasm]). No one had rang us!

I've got absolutely no problem with the school closing, the snow here was pretty bad. Its a small village school and most teacher live a fair drive away. What annoyed me was the lack of communication. Not ringing all the parents is one thing but why did they not ring the radio stations?

I've just been told by 2 parents that the school is open tomorrow so fingers crossed the school don't change their minds in the morning!

We were told DD1's school was closed by local radio at 7.45 ish, Twin's school announce at 8.15, 15 minutes after we would have left for the bus had OH not taken the day off. Boy .am I glad he was here, he was going to drive them which meant he would have had to leave at 8.30

I'm signed up to the text mesaging service at my kids school, so got messages at 6am yesterday and today saying school is closed and another at around 5.30pm tonight saying closed tomorrow too. Maybe some of you could suggest that this is something your kids school looks into. :)

Aren't there any announcements on your local council's website?
