There is too much elf and safety in some respects.
I agree entirely, but they have to follow the rules. As soon as they didn't, and little Jack or Jane sliped and hurt him/herself, they'd be in trouble.******** Never be a spectator of unfairness or stupidity *******"Always be calm and polite, and have the materials to make a bomb"0 -

I think teachers want a long weekend
Shows how little you know! It's NOT the teachers who decide that the school will close it's the Headteacher! Please don't give anybody another excuse for teacher bashing
why did you not ask the head why the school was closing instead on venting on here now?LBM: August 2006 £12,568.49 - DFD 22nd March 2012

If you have children, sometimes you're inconvenienced and have to look after them. It happens.
Oh no Nicky, nowadays parents don't moan they just threaten to sue the school and the teachers!LBM: August 2006 £12,568.49 - DFD 22nd March 2012

I agree that's annoying to be told that morning come in, then getting there and being told to go home.
I would be hacked off too.
At least you have advance notice about tomorrow.Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?

I am certain that if the schools had the system of Snow Days like they have in America and Canada fewer would close. A day closed that is then taken off the Christmas Holidays would I am sure encourage everyone to make more effort to get to school and ensure that the premises is safe for students. To Dare is To Do:beer:0

I was thinking only this morning that the last thing the teachers need at this time of year is not getting to work, it just means their work is doubled up next week, in our case, its the school concerts next week, and they'll have missed a week's practice, the kids will be a week behing with their work, and they will still be expected to teach the kids and prepare them for their next round of testing. Yes they get more time at home, but its just as well, as I imagine they will be stressed out of their minds next week with work! It's what is inside your head that matters in life - not what's outside your window

I am not teacher bashing ?
To me it seemed odd that ALL staff were in - most of the kids were in school was heated and lights were on, no more heavy snow predicted yet were were told to take kids home again.
If it rains kids are kept inside - if it snows they are sent home?

I drive 40 miles to get to my school and can always get there easily. But we are closed today as well, and shut early yesterday. Don't get me wrong as a teacher a day off is a nice added bonus...but then when it's hitting exam time and you still haven't finished teaching it can be a touch stressful as well.
Schools do not shut likely, and it is annoying because now I have to replan everything because I won't be able to teach anything involving equiptment (I'm a science teacher) because it won't be ready. It's more hassle to me than it's worth.
Also, we have no control over our school grounds - it's an external company thats responsible for it. The grounds weren't too bad for us. However, the roads in the town were dreadful and thats why we are closed. I do get a little annoyed at the implication people aren't making the effort. Both on behalf of teachers and the majority of parents alike.Reduction in daily mortgage interest since October 23 (new mortgage) - £2.36 July 25

Frankly I dont think there's any difference to this scenario than going or travelling to a nearby train station and then being told your journey has been cancelled or delayed. Logically you would phone the train station in advance to see what's going on, wouldn't you? The problem is that opinions and reasoning can change within 5 seconds and when so many parents are phoning/jamming the phone lines/constant texting, meanwhile in the background the headteacher is thinking of the long term implication of problems arising if the weather gets worse not just the initial opening of the school in the morning.
Even if the weather isn't going to get worse, there are several problems from the initial visit to the school because of previous weather. If the majority of the teachers can't get in, then it makes sense for the school to close. If the heating system has packed up, legally the school has to close. At least in some schools, parents are getting phone calls back to apologise for the inconvienience. I've never got a call back from the rail companies yet!0
