Not being devils advocate, but the straight arrow in the left hand lane maybe doesn't mean you must turn left at the lights, (turn left arrows indicate that with the arrow head pointing to the left). Maybe they have now changed the markings and it does now have a left pointing arrow in the left lane??

As previously posted, the fact that a court date has been set will be concentrating the minds of the lawyers and hopefully they will reach a settlement before you have to actually go to court.

thanks for that, yes you are correct the arrow does point straight ahead, under the first car in the middle lane the arrow points straight ahead and right which is the lane he should of been in.

pointing straight ahead onto the dual carriageway is what the arrows mean.

Actually I think the straight-on arrow effectively mean take that first junction in this instance not continue on, if you'd wanted to carry on around then you'd need to be in the outside lane or middle (assuming that marking has a straight and right-turn arrow).

EDIT: BikingBarney just beat me to it.

she basically told me that after she received my statement and photos of the accident scene she wrote a very comprehensive letter to the solicitors representing the other party. basically saying that he had crossed road markings etc and had caused the accident, they contacted her back saying no thats not true and that the road markings had changed between us having the accident and me taking the photos i supplied her with, this is completely untrue and im led to believe they are just grasping at straws here.

Easily proven, there will be records of when or if the markings have ever been changed.

Were the road arrow markings in the original photo evidence sent to the third party (ie the one where they claimed the photo was taken some time after the incident) different to the one now published above?

In the one published above the straight arrow (in the left lane) means you are in the wrong lane if you want to turn right! It doesn't mean you "have" to turn left.

Strange road-markings, to say the least.
Generally on a roundabout straight on means keep going round the roundabout and left means come off the roundabout (think about how you indicate).
But that would suggest that you can't come off the roundabout at that exit, as there is no left turn arrow in any lane!
The lane markings (dotted lines) clearly suggest the left hand lane is to come off the roundabout only.

Do I take it that he was in the left hand lane and you were in the middle lane, and you both wanted to end up in the left hand lane after the exit?
Do the dotted line markings indicate that the middle lane traffic uses the left hand lane after the exit? I'm imagining they do.

But I don't know if the arrows make it slightly shakey ground.
    have they changed since?

Markings have changed, however the lines tell the driver which way to go.

I think/suspect the markings changed from a left arrow to straight arrow, to stop people taking a left hook onto the wrong side of the M5, there have been MANY reports of this happening with OAPs using Satnav's.

  • Hi thanks for the replies.

The markings haven't changed in about 4 years as far as i can gather, strider is correct, the left hand lane used to have a left arrow but people were driving onto the m5 the wrong way..

jimmy the wig..... he was in left lane and i was in middle lane. i was taking the outside lane of the exit which it is entirely legal to do, i did not cross the lines in the middle at all. he wanted to carry on round the island from his lane which the road markings clearly state that he cannot do and therefore he drove into the side of my car.

Quentin. the same photos i have posted went to the insurance company, i dont have any other photos.

    hope this helps

It doesn't look as clear cut as you say.

The lane markings don't show drivers in the left lane that they have to turn left.

Were that so, there would be filter left type lane markings.

The road is basically the same as this..... http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&q=bromsgrove&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Bromsgrove,+Hereford+and+Worcester,+United+Kingdom&ll=52.355915,-2.045473&spn=0.00043,0.001298&t=k&z=20

People often get totally confused as to what lane they should be in, despite the road markings.
Note the straight arrow and the markings similar to those in the above posts.

Only the left hand lane is allowed onto the motorway, it is not allowed to continue round.

I'm massively confused at all the markings and terms indicated and I plan and sketch these things for a living!

Google maps is probably 2008-ish. It looks as if since then spiral markings have been introduced (from the overhead I can understand why).

For me, I would not have a left arrow on the circulatory carriageway before a no-entry roundabout arm. It is tempting fate- esp when from a drivers view the exit it refers to is more straight. In the Google pictures there is an inconsistency between lane 1 and 2 in that the A38 N is left in lane 1 and ahead in lane 2 (on streetview)- both were left in the aerial).

The current markings of ahead arrow A38 in lane 1, ahead and right in lane 2 with destinations are correct and what I would do.

If a driver has continued right around the inside he would cross the dashed line of the spiral marking which guides the lanes off the roundabout, and therefore would have made an unsafe lane change?

I don't know where filter comes in as a filter is only where the lights have arrows to go through red lights.

    I think that is right?
