No Buying Toiletries in December Challenge

  • At last, some more u/u.

    1. Olay cleansing cloths (the dry ones in a black box). I cut these in half so they last longer. Bought with a Boots coupon. WIBA - yes. They last for ages when split in two and do a good cleansing/exfoliating job.

    2. Johson's 3 in 1 wipes. WIBA? Yes, they take off eye-makeup as well as foundation. I use them on a no makeup/light makeup day.

    3. Philosophy shower gel in Icing Sugar, or some equally sickly flavour. Part of a set I got in a charity shop. WIBA? Definitely not. The smell made me feel quite nauseous.

In - Rimmel 60 second nail polish in metallic green. To replace one that had died. Only £2.90 in Wilkos. I love this colour. It goes with turquoise and green and seems to tone down my red hands.

Sorry if my first post came across as harsh/unpleasent but its just I occasionally look through this thread, and it confuses me because I see people who say they are MoneySaving or are in debt (some signatures say they are £50,000 in debt ) and then in their post it talks about Using Up (UU) a Clinique eye cream or Bobbi Brown eyeshadow and the two just do not add up! I suppose its because I am comparing it to my family/friends who just do not buy these brands because they know they cant afford it.

Apology accepted! In a lot of cases those brands have been given as gifts - so haven't added to debt. For the most part those on here who have got into debt as a result of their own spending are happy to hold their hands up and admit to it - as I say the very fact that they are here now means that they have faced the problem and are dealing with it. I'm another in the "not in debt" category (Unless you count the mortgage, which we actually do, and are overpaying) - I like the DFW board because it's such a friendly, positive place to post, and they kindly let me lodge there! :D As I say though, that does lead to a degree of protectiveness creeping in as they have had such awful problems with trolls over there - when you consider that many posters start off on there bordering on suicidal as a result of debts that, in many cases, are simply not their fault (if you are in doubt, look for Lisawaters first thread, or Hypno's - they are two which spring to mind) then someone coming along at the wrong moment and lambasting them without knowing the whole story can be quite literally disastrous.

Personally, I have a few Clinque "HG" (Holy Grail) products (loose powder, and tinted moisturiser) that I would always go back to, but then I also have budget products which are firm favourites - L'Oreal eye makeup remover being one - at only £2.69 per bottle that's certainly :money: friendly! I am one of those who was guilty of feeling that I couldn't use my "nice" products all the time - hence they sat oin the cupboard and went off - this thread has made me and many others address this and things are now being used!

As for me, while I was never in debt, I used to waste money paying full price for things, but not any more since I joined MSE! Hence my savings have rocketed in the last 4 years.

I too am impressed by the DFWs on this site, I think that their determination to repay their debts is amazing.

I noticed your signature Tara - you've done phenomenally well!! :T

And I agree with the second part of the snipped quote above too - I love the thing of people making a mistake, facing it and then dealing with it. It's such a valuable life-lesson too - I speak from experience!

  • Last few splutters:
Elemis hand cream - wiba no purely on price though. This product is lovely, it's the collagen (blue) one. It retails at about £30! More than Chanel even I think. I got it part of a (reduced) gift set. It's lovely quality and I'm sure it helped my nails grow really well.

    Recent discovery:
Those puffy shower wash things - Wilkinsons sell them for about 49p! Bargain. One squirt of shower gel and they last ages. Thanks to everyone who kept mentioning these, glad I've tried them. They are now a Holy Grail thing!

mineallmine, when you're trying to finish the last of a shower gell off the shower puffy things are the bain of your life lol but i wouldn't be without one, they certainly make things last for ages.

Well i bit the bullet last night and disposed of those bottles of things which had been open for donkey's years and were unlikely to be used up, so to list them:
    Sanctury Face Wash
    Sanctury Toner
    Sanctury Face Moisturiser
    Avon Nail soak
    Avon eye makeup remover
    2 x Sun tan lotion
Double base cream - not new but it dried my hands and made them crack rather than moisturised them which is not the purpose of it.

Felt nice to be free of these bottles. I've also sorted out my Dove shower gels to give to my sister as they cause rashes on me. I'm also tempted to send her a large bottle of hair conditioner for my neices as they had run out on christmas eve and their long hair was a bu99er to brush. Plus my OH bought 3 bottles at something silly like 40p each and it will take me years to get to them. Also because i have more conditioner bottles than shampoo i feel that i need to make them equal numbers and start to obsess that i need to buy more shampoo. (I've also got loads of this see list above) lol. I think i am more than a little OCD about these things.

Thanks :o It's challenging but I am really proud of it, and hopefully by the time OH and I buy a house we'll have a nice manageable mortgage. :) I have just updated my sig with my new target for 2011!!!

p.s. trudi, I have seen a very good 'posh' shampoo offer, let me know if you want a link xo

I never use shower puffs (I have several - they go in the gift stash as soon as I get them), should I start?

rosemary - yay for your bargains coupon queen!!!!

prudencekitten - well done on the UUs, that's great going.

    - well done too, and I totally agree about the shampoo/conditioner imbalance lol!

Right, off to pluck my brows (haven't had them waxed in 2 months, grr, must book an appointment soon) and try to sort out my face... have several chin spots atm which must be down to the cold weather :(

I always have more bottles of conditioner because I seem to use more of it than shampoo, usually a bottle of shampoo will last twice as long (sometimes nearly 3 times) as a bottle of conditioner...maybe I'm doing something wrong lol

They work amazingly well with soap too. Much nicer than just using a bar of soap and trying to make suds in the shower. With soap they give a really rich creamy lather and very economical, a couple of swipes on the bar of soap makes loads of lather.

I keep saying I will start using them with soap and stop buying shower gel tbh, however even though I don't think I've bought any shower gel this year, with gifts, DD's leftovers and free samples there somehow seems to be a never-ending supply!
