That's just a viral text message. There's no fixed penalty for excessive snow.

That said, pass it on anyway, maybe it'll get people to clear the snow off their cars?

Yes, it's a viral, but it comes under "obstructed vision" in the same way as you can get into trouble for having a big air freshener hanging from the rear view mirror ( yes lots of people do it and don't get into trouble, doesn't mean if they get stopped they wont be done for it if they get mouthy with the copper who stops them for something else)

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/DG_069859 is the online copy of the highway code - while much of it isn't LAW per se, it does list laws in force under the advice to clear your windscreen.

I do find it strange that so many 4x4 drivers can afford a big Mumtruck but can't afford a long handled broom to take the snow off the top of it... or do they think they're showing off carrying the "inches of snow" they go out from on their vehicle.:rotfl:

and particularly entertaining if it comes off in big lumps as you accelerate up to 70 on the slip road of the M1 and then pull out in front of a motor bike :D

Stupid, dangerous, and likely to get you a ticket if the police see you and a bloody nose or a smashed headlight if I'm on the bike and catch you.

You'll get a ticket if they just see snow piled up on the roof anyway.
  • Just to add another path to this, the Highway Code states:
    229
    Before you set off
you MUST be able to see, so clear all snow and ice from all your windows
you MUST ensure that lights are clean and number plates are clearly visible and legible
make sure the mirrors are clear and the windows are demisted thoroughly
remove all snow that might fall off into the path of other road users
check your planned route is clear of delays and that no further snowfalls or severe weather are predicted

removing any snow with the normal tools found in everyones boot will sratch the paint. removing if necessery need to be done by cloth of any type (even that make small scratches). best is to leave any snow on roof ,bonnet(if over 3 inches try removing at least the top layer by hand),boot and any painted surfaces. remove snow form windows and drive off. the bonnet will melt away once the engine heat up and the roof snow will be blown away over the car behind you so not your problem :P

most people do this but BE AWARE if any snow blows onto a car travelling behind you and causes an accident you could be prosecuted for careless driving. This is stated in the highway code which says that you must remove any snow from your car before setting out.

I wonder who bothers to clear their number plates these days when all they're useful for is checking your speed/tax/insurance/MOT and keeping a detailed log of where you've been in their centralised database.

If i'm not using the car I leave it cocooned. If we are getting alot I do try to have a clear off of the front and rear screens, only reason is a foot of snow pressing down on your wiper blades not good.

i've just cleared my car of snow this evening. Not used it since wednesday night when the snow started. Was like 2 foot deep on the roof!

i wish that your correspondents would learn the difference in spelling of similar sounding words.
An example is: 'of',instead of 'off'.
    Everbody's doing it!

leeuk was right. He cleared his car of snow, or he could have written he cleared the snow off of his car.:p

better not mention your poor spelling, lack of capital or the missing space after the comma, eh? that really would be feeding the troll.;)
