  • I think a fuzzy wuzzy pat on the head from you, would be akin to a good smack on the bonce with a mallet, i'll pass if you don't mind:rotfl:

Couldn't have put it better myself!!!

My Father is an Alcoholic, unfortunately despite losing his job, career, driving license, home and Family....he is still the only one who dosent think he has a problem???
I can't imagine how I would cope if I had witnessed the things my Father did as a child..... but that's another story, obviously self inflicted!

I work for a Charity supporting many different Charities in Nottinghamshire, I don't do fuzzy wuzzy pat on the head either, I work hard to help people come through whatever bad cards life has thrown at them, be it drink, drugs, homelessness, debt, rape, child abuse, poverty, domestic violence, disability, injury......

Good on you Joanne - I've worked in this field, and have seen some of the struggles that people go through. OP I hope you get the support you need to get you back on your feet.

Gosh, I hope you manage to get into the detox unit.
My brother, after 14 years of sobriety, lapsed.
So awful to see, he has been in a detox unit & is now on medication so that if he drinks, he will get a severe reaction. He's doing really well, so proud of him. Hope you get the help you need :)

He suffers from mental health issues too (started while he was sober).

My dad was a alkie and I was their to witness his death, people assume that an alkie dies slowly when their liver gives up but many alkies die like my dad, he bled to death over 5 or 6 hours, he was bleeding from every orafis and it was horrific to be their and see a loved one die like that and three years later I can still remember every single detail and Im having treatment to help me cope with (among other issues)

DB congratulations on being dry for five years, my dad was dried out a few times but he still couldnt come to terms with what happened to him in the Korean war (I apparently have secondary PTSD because of this)

    Good luck with your treatment.

please excuse my typing, my speach to text softwera is playing up and my hand dont work due to RA>
  • Hi folks, just dropped by to thank people for there kind words, and also for the invaluable info that was posted, as a result i have found somewhere to stay untill i go into detox on monday, i started this thread to have a bit of a rant/whine, and to be honest i did'nt expect to get a particularly positive response, we get bad press us homeless folk, especially if our situation is percieved as self inflicted, and yes nobody holds a gun to my head, but that perception fails to recognise the concept of powerlessness, which is a bummer at the best of times, sorry for bumping this thread, but i did'nt want to start a new one just to thank people, happy christmas to all on MSE.
  • Hi disability-brown, just saw your thread and I'm glad you've found a place to stay.

I am sorry you got some nasty responses on this thread. Even though you may have brought some of your problems on yourself there is no point in people berating you for it when you're asking for help!! I am amazed at the lack of compassion shown to someone without a roof over their head in light of the freezing temperatures up and down the country!

Thought I'd just add a link to the organisation Emmaeus. It is a charity that runs communities of homeless people and organises employment in their shops//cafes etc. It may be some use to you (or others who search the forum) in future. http://www.emmaus.org.uk/

    Best of luck.
