I take them for granted too! That isn't to say I don't take great pleasure in seeing them, and I was very very excited to see one on home turf (there are loads where I travel for work regularly but fewer where I actually live), but I was more excited to see waxwings as I have never seen them. I volunteer at a wetland with bitterns but still never seen one...

I saw my 1st one about 6 years ago - there is a nesting site about 5 miles away. Then again after about a year. Then after 6 months. Etc etc. Now, when the weather is decent & I'm out & about I expect to see one. OH sees them every Saturday when he's playing golf (only birdies he sees :rotfl:) and I see them above the house sometimes. They are magnificent :D. In Spain we get hoopoes which are gorgeous. But my fave birds are sparrows. Groovy little things, love the way they bounce about :j, and in Spain they are very tame and sit on the back of your chairs waiting to pounce on crumbs. Am off to Gambia shortly, last year there was a lovely little egret which followed the gardener round, hope it's there again :).

PS I have just reached the end of my bird knowledge. Apart from magpies. I know them :o.

Hope Mr Stripes has a trip at all, and also that it is good :)

Me too! Growing up in London there were always lots of sparrows about, now they are so rare in London as to be pretty much endangered, which is sad. In Paris they have learnt to hover in front of the tourists to get crumbs, which they will then take straight from your fingers, or land on your hand to pick them up - they are wonderful little birds.
    Morning

Well thats a lot of birdie talk isnt it?

I guess its maybe like we were when we lived off the west coast we had coughs, corncrakes and a pair of eagles out the back of the garden on the cliffs - you get you to your daily bird dose don't you! Not nearly as exciting as red kites. In North Uist we had corncrakes in the garden to much jealousy of a lot of folks south!! Hmmm....west side, somewhere near Balranald by any chance?! :D We love Balranald - sometimes one of our local RSPB reserves does a survey of member, and it's always fun when we head there in May-ish to be able to answer the question "What was the last reserve you visited" with "Balranald" as most of the chaps there haven't been and have it on their lists to get to "one day"!

Loving the sound of all these adventures we're all having and have had!! I saw Egrets in belize I think and a toucan (!)

Mr s on his way, bad snow at the north, we'll see there's a boat later, arriving safe rather than not is more important.

Chickens tidied out and all cleaned out (phew - did the whole shed) - 5 eggs so far
Cleared out garage for impending local waste group picking up 2/4 of the contents - yippee I might even get the car back in there - also collected up the dry straw and bagged it up - got 5 bags which is better than I thought - means roughly 5 weeks of bedding for the chookiewookies which is more than I thought I had.

DD salopets up and drying, dad phoned to say he'd give a bit of money for her spends - peedie asleep, ds asleep and dd in living room pottering away - a very sleepy happy house at the moment - I'm off to do a few hours before all the chaos later.

    :)

Maty - nice to meet a fellow forces child - my dad was in Army - we only got back to scotland when I was 12 - sorry to hear about your mum though (()) nice that she's got some 'fresh air' now. xxxx

Goodness me Stripes you've been busy! Well done to clearing the garage and LOL to putting the car in it, surely you can think of a less boring use for it than that?! :rotfl:

Ahhh....now would that be an RSPB reserve, or a H&MWT one? I have a feeling we might live pretty close to one another! :D As for the Bitterns, I've seen one once, at Amwell, last year. Have looked again every time I've been back there since but never seen another!

It is EH! Was just a tiny little thing from the garden centre, took a while to get established, but it's doing really well there now, just in a tub, in a really shady bit by the back door. It's great! :T

Right - phd for a while - bleurgh. Hope Mr Stripes arrived Pippi! :D
