  • Oh dear KC - we've similar probs - one hairy mutt and two long haired girls in the house

Very quiet here - starnac hope you OK - we're snowed in - tried to get car out - um no thank you. Meeting at work going ahead without me I think? (dunno if that good or bad?)

Paid the rent a day early (feel noble) - worked out my share of the rent here is £8.75 a day - which is how much I'm going to put accross each day to the rent account to keep me in check.

I've a huge pile of ebay things sitting here which I've photos of - can't decide waht to do - obviously ebay better at this time of year for bits of nice things.......................

I'm a bit out of sorts and very tired - guessa few things changing at the moment.

Kid home - quiet so far - DD made a cheesecake (packet but she found it fun) and ds avoiding his maths which he can do later.

Raked out some batch cooking earlier to make up for later - can't decide if home whether or not to take out one (!) of the turkeys (3 in the freezer) and cook it when its thawed.
(I'd read about stocking up on turkey in Essential living for frugal dummies or something - theory is its cheaper per lb than chicken when its in season and cheap so if you stock up at this time of year then you can use it over the year iyswim.

Kids off school - my major excitement was a robin here yesterday first time I've seen one here on stripey island for 3-4 years (well in my patch anyway) :) - I've a question - I've a billion (I kid not) starlings on the various bird tables - who are bullyign the rest of my wee birdies - any ideas - I've tried spreading the food out - they just bully over a larger distance........

What about some sort of net type thing that only the smaller birds can fit through and put food for the smaller birdies inside???

horrible white stuff coming out of the sky here at the moment.

i seem to be contemplating looking at re doing the double glazing in our flat.
    Pro's
    * We currently have a freezing house, with old metal framed double glazing.
    * Patio door is currently 8ft wide x approx 6ft tall and is a wall of cold, i would want to replace it with smaller patio doors and half cover/brick the remaining section with a window on top.
    * Will be able to lock new windows and doors open for ventilation, whereas currently no openable windows in living room and bedroom windows have been known to completely open themselves with the smallest gust of wind in the middle of winter.
    * the current windows have condensation between the two panes of glass
    * lock on the current patio door is basic to say the least
    * local company are offering 35% off and potential buy now pay in 12 mths
    * flat isn't saleable in its current state because of other issues and windows would be just another excuse
    * currently seem to spend a fortune on leccy trying to heat the flat and it's a losing battle with ice still on windows
    * there's only one small kitchen window, one large bedroom window and the patio doors to replace.

    Cons
    * it's money that i should use against the debt
    * we will move but with the doubtful situation at work it's now likely to be in about 18mths - 2 years time
    * there will be redundancies at work in the next 4 years and i'm in the section which is being reviewed but i won't know my fate for a while yet.

    any thoughts?
I have a now inbuilt fear of getting more debt but i keep trying to think that this would be a good investment.

it is a good investment LT especially if you think it will go against you in regards to selling. i know how you feel about adding to your debt and sometimes it feels stupid spending money on a house/flat you are looking to sell anyway.

like you said though savings in bills and a better chance of selling in the future are def plus points

  • LT other big plus you've not mentioned is that it will

    increase your comfort
    reduce your bills
increase the value of your property in the long term which will be good point for buyers when you put it on the market

I'd go for it but I know how careful you are with your money - it does sound like an investment which will improve your life, property and the value of your house.

that's what i keep thinking to myself that it's silly to not do it. Obviously i've yet to arrange for them to come out and give me a quote but they have a good reputation for not trying to swindle people.

I wonder if anyone else has personal experience of just how much difference going from (approx 30yr old) metal framed double glazing to new UPVC glazing.

LT it will cost nothing to get a quote then once you've got that you can make an informed decision cos you'll know exactly how much it'll cost you/add to your debt and you'll be in a better position to weigh up the costs against savings
