Winter tyres?

4mm is the manufacturers wear limit, they can still be legally used below this, they just won't grip as well.
Depends on whether or not you're the sort of person who puts new tyres on for winter, or tries to run on 1.6mm summer tyres.
A 3mm winter tyre is better than a 3mm summer tyre with the right conditions.
Think we'll see part worn 4mm german winter tyres on sale soon, to match the part worn 3mm summer tyres they chuck out when they hit their limit too?0 -
Thank you. Begs question why Volvo garage said two would be fine. Pity as usually excellent service.
Pedantic comment welcomed. I am losing my grip but that's old age

Yes. Two has meant whilst I can now move on a snowy road. The rear end is prone to starting to slip sideways, even at low speed0

Regardless of the debate, put four on then. You'll certainly improve the grip.
I suppose if you haven't put two on, you've never have got off the drive, so argueably it would have been safer on four summer tyres.
(unless you were trying to get home, and didn't make it.)0 -

Hi guys,
I am back again.. Can you please advise?
I found 4 steel wheels with brand new All-weather continental tyres on for £250.. fitting for free..(seller garage near by).
My car currently has the original tyres it came with on.. I don't think they are all-weather.
Your opinions?0 -

All weather tyres are summer tyres, you need winter tyres, with the snowflake/mountain symbol on.0 -
Thank you all for the above. V helpful. Just joined to post a q.
Alarmed by 2 or 4 debate I have just called garage to order two more tyres. They messed up and only gave me two on Friday when I had booked for 4. They cannot now match the make but have alternative, still winter, tyres.
Advice/ comments appreciated. (Volvo V70). Certainly the front winter tyres have been brilliant. But have noticed less grip at back

No idea what you mean.
I still reckon even two different typres of winter tyres, are better than 2 alone, so long as they're kept as pairs on the same end.0
