Winter tyres?
Comments

Hi guys,
I found winter tyres on Ebay for relatively acceptable price (as I will also have to pay for fitting..).
They are used, make Fulda Kristall and have 4mm thread left... £110 for set of 4.
What do you think please?0 -

4mm is the minimum tread depth for winter tyres really so they are at their limits.0 -
Winter tyres are not just for the current snow/ice/slush conditions we have - they are for whole winter when daytime temps are generally below 7 - 10 degrees
Most of us will not (hopefully anyway!) be driving on snow etc for most of the winter so what many seem to be ignoring is that you ideally want similar tread pattern tyres on front and rear axles for general use. 4 regular summer tyres will be better for most of the winter if you cannot change all 4 as we will not have snow for much of it0 -

For the time being tho' I've purchased a set of these:

I'm hoping they at least help get my car on the drive.
Why not get them and put them on your current rims this year? You can find some cheaper wheels next year once winter is over
The mats I am sure may be useful to keep near the drive but they are only 2 foot long! Old off cuts of carpet kept in the garage would be just as useful I would guess0 -

Oh really? There are even lower ones offered on Ebay, so I didn't know that..

As to add to the argument.. (not that it needs to).
My friend has delivery van and he only fitted 2 winter tyres on and he says that unless you are young racing driver in training he doesn't think that 2 winter tyres are any more dangerous then 4 summer ones... However the 2 make massive difference to traction on snow, he can easily attempt uncleared side roads without worry of getting stuck.
Given that this morning I was CRAWLING to work anyway due to other cars on the road I am not sure I am going to drive like a young racing driver any time soon.... However the 2 would at least give me some grip going up hill and ensure that I don't get stuck if some other driver in front of me stops in the middle of the hill..0 -
Thank you all for the above. V helpful. Just joined to post a q.
Alarmed by 2 or 4 debate I have just called garage to order two more tyres. They messed up and only gave me two on Friday when I had booked for 4. They cannot now match the make but have alternative, still winter, tyres.
Advice/ comments appreciated. (Volvo V70). Certainly the front winter tyres have been brilliant. But have noticed less grip at back
Thank you0 -

Thank you
Providing you have similar type ie all season, summer, winter etc , tyres on each axle you should be fine with a different make
On a pedantic point you don't have less grip at the back, you just have more at the front!!0 -
I've had my winter tyres fitted now-some part worn dunlop winter 3d and they are fantastic on the snow and ice, easily getting me places I'd have had no chance before. You do need to brake a bit harder on non slippy roads though compared to summer tyres, but the fact that you can actually brake on snow and ice without locking up more than makes up for it.0

Well, I wouldn't normally (!), but I've just checked my owner's manual (S60). It says: "Always use winter tyres on all four wheels!"
It also adds that petrol-driven turbo engines should use 205/55R16, which is the same size as the currently fitted summer tyres.
It further adds that snow chains may only be fitted on the front, not that I've got any.
:whistle:If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0
