Not really chefs, my favourite food writers are Elizabeth David and Jane Grigson (both no longer with us). I love Nigel Slater too :) Not at all surprised to find out he is gay ;)

The ones I hate with a passion are Ainsley Harriott and Gary Rhodes. Don't really like Delia, but she taught me to bake bread so I've got to be grateful for that.

Have to agree with all the votes for Nigel Slater - he almost drools with enthusiam, and you can't help but feel his passion.

For sheer 'jaw on the floor' for her complete disregard for basic hygiene and good manners, it has to be Fanny Craddock. Her Christmas Specials are always shown on the UK Food channel in the run up to Christmas - and they are hysterical. She is so rude to her helpers - its shockingly funny. The recipes she produces are so unappetising too.

I'm sure I read something about Nigel Slater about a year ago, apparently he considers himself incapable of any form of long term relationship, be it friendship or more intimate and consequently has only acquaintances or suchlike. Wish I could remember it was fascinating.

He's a strange one, even if he wasn't gay, probably not ieal husband material Loubee!!! :D

I am a bit of a Nigel fan as well and I love his 'Real Cooking' book - the most pared down bare bones recipes you can get but his passion for good ingredients comes through

And his autobiography 'Toast' is pretty good reading too xx

Delia Smith - 'taught' me to cook and I have yet to have one of her recipes fail me

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall - has made me look at food in a new way, i.e. grow your own, use seasonal /local produce, etc

Now cooking much more with Jamie Oliver and getting into Gordon Ramsey

Grew up watching Floyd on Food with my parents so also have a glass of wine to hand when cooking !!! :D

frizz - I've watched those Christmas specials ... :rotfl: ... entertaining, but never inspirational.

MimiF - sounds like the only relationship he has time for is his relationship with food.

Jocasta Innes is great for budget recipes

  • I'm also a Nigel Slater fan for his simple, no-fuss food.

I love Delia's never-fail recipes (she got me through my first successful Christmas dinner for 10 hungry ski guests when I was running a chalet in the Austrian mountains!).

Jamie Oliver, for his cool recipes and his 'peoples champion' kids food crusade. I think he's going to make a significant difference to the health of the entire nation. brilliant man. (Plus he's just opened a restaurant near where I live in Cornwall :D )

And Rick Stein - because he's also from my county and inspires me to get up v.v. early to go to the harbour for fresh fish straight from the boats. I love living by the sea. :D
