in this poster's case, if they're stealing things from people's gardens then clearly they are, as he has said, thieves.
what else do you call the people he has just described as sneaking onto people's property and taking things that don't belong to them? honest, hard working, salt of the earth folk trying to make a living?

CLEVER USERNAME
As you have yourself stated, you think they are thieves so i would kind of expect that you would agree.
However there have been numerous posters on here who state that they think that some of them do a good job,and have saved them money.
Should we really tar all proffesions with the same brush,im mean there is good and bad in all.Forum spellcheckers are the pitts.0 -

you responded to oopsadaisy's post that these people in his area are regularly breaking into gardens and stealing things and that they are thieves by saying 'good grief, because they're earning a few pounds they're thieves!'
of course they're thieves if they're taking property from people without permission. surely you're not so obtuse as to tell oppsadaisy that these people he describes are not thieves?0 -

Yes we have been over it and im glad you accept it.
I did respond to Oops post,im sure that all the gardens in his area that have been rifled of there goodies was done by the scrapmen and only the local scrapman,if thats the case then im sure the the police in that area have no need to investigate every time a gnome goes missing, its strait to the local scrapman to retrieve the said gnome.
I do however take issue with the word you used against me that being obtuse,do you not think that you were being rather obtuse yourself when you called these people council estate, idiots, who are scroungers and thieves when you have little or no evidence to back that up.
you take issue with the scrapmen in your area, thats fine that is entirely your perogitive,i would say that the next time they are in your area trying to do people a favour, bring your gnomes into the house, you never know the scrapman may have a wee gnome collecting hobby.Forum spellcheckers are the pitts.0 -

'hide your clay gnomes so the people looking for metal don't steal them'. why on earth would i call you obtuse when you're giving out solid gold advice like that eh? :rotfl:0 -

Scrap is valuable. Perhaps they're just trying to make a living.
Agreed, we've had a couple call round here, we made a couple of quid on some stuff earmarked for the tip, they make a few bob too.
Personally I rather admire those who are prepared to make the best of a down turn in their circumstances, rather than sit on their arsicles. If the vans are dangerous, or their loads dangerous, take the reg. no. and contact the police.
In our neighbourhood, the vans have been old, one certainly had the loudspeaker, another knocked on doors, but they appeared roadworthy and their loads were secure.I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.
Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.0 -
I've had to stop them lifting stuff from a neighbours and caught them in my back garden before.
I HAVE given them stuff before, but that doesnt give them the right to steal or come onto my property uninvited.
Most of them round here dont come from council estates and will offer to buy caravans if you have one.
I also suspect (but cant prove and not in my nature to report people) that they arnt exactly declaring all their income (if any).
They dont have loudspeakers and they only appear on a Thursday (uplift day!).0
