  • I bought 3 packets of the cheap golden rice and made that up last night for a pot luck supper. It went down really well

    Hello all
    was wondering what people though.
I'm organising a function for 80-100 people and am trying to work out what will be cheaper - buying and making food or having it done for me.
i've been quoted £100 for a buffet for 100 people which would be fine, but am spending enough on the party so want to save where possible.
Could I feed around 100 people on the normal buffet (sandwiches, sausage rolls, crisps, breadsticks, dips etc etc) for much less than £100 if i did it myself?

    any idea's greatly appreciated

Short answer - yes. especially if you can get hold of catering sizes of foodstuffs. use 'value' loaves for the sandwiches and packs of offcuts of ham etc. look in places like Farmfoods and Iceland for special offers on packs of sausage rolls or tiny pasties. buy huge value packs of cheese, etc. buy plain crisps in the largest quantities you can find (own brand), no one will know the difference.if you are doing dips then crudities are cheap - just carrots cut into batons, cauli florets, etc. and a couple of quids worth of raw veg goes a long way!
Ive done buffets for similar numbers for £50 - £60. but, I have started getting the ingredients beforehand when I see a bargain (and frozen them til needed if necessary). make sure you have plenty of bowls of crisps to fill in any gaps and as long as the table is filled you have nothing to worry about.
  • howdy all its LOs 4th bday on sunday and we are having an adult only party for her (having a kids party as well which is all sorted)

there will be about 10 adults at lunchtime some who will have driven a long way just to see her on her bday so i said i would do a buffet but i dont know what food to have that will be easy to eat, not take too long to do, wont leave me with loads of washing up (for hubby to do)

French bread, a good cheese board with sliced apples and grapes, cold meats, pate, pickles and chutneys in nice dishes always goes down well with some posh crisps.

Howabout small roast potatoes halved lengthwise, scooped out and reheated with mash + cheese + onion etc? They'd be fine cold so you could do them the day before. Cherry tomatoes hollowed + filled with Boursin. Mini spring rolls, mini Indian snacks etc. Silverskin onions + gherkins. Tortillas + dips. Roast mediterranean veg + couscous. Swedish meatballs with cranberry sauce. Coronation chicken. Glazed honey + mustard cocktail sausages. If people are standing around, you don't want anything too fiddly to eat with one hand. Cook a whole salmon or side fillet and let people pick at it?

  • We always cater for the adults at lo party.
We tend to have the usual nibbles, crisps, pizza cut into slices and sausage rolls.
Then to finnish it off we have pork baps, with stuffing and apple sauce. We buy a joint of pork on special offer, then make a tray of stuffing then cheap rolls.
They always go down a storm every year
