The kindest thing we can do as owners is knowing when to say goodbye..............and know that one day we will see them again.

You should definitely get another dog if you are able to. When I lost my old dog I was devastated and the only thing that made me feel better was getting another dog.
That dog's 2 now and I'm besotted with him.0 -

Desperate Housewife,
Like yourself I keep looking at rescue sites one in particular that may interest you is called dogsblog (dot com). I am still undecided as to whether to get another dog for a couple of reasons. I have had two dogs in my life a collie I had from a puppy who lived to 16 years old, making me 23 at the time 6 weeks later I got my boy Flint who as you all know sadly died in November making me now 33 years old. I would have my boy back at the drop of a hat if I could turn back time but the past few weeks have shown me just how tying having an animal can be. My wife and I would always base our days or nights out around getting back for the dog, so he wasn't left alone for too long. Saying that I do miss the companionship in the afternoons. All I ask is the chance to prove that money can't make me happy...

We had to have our GSD put to sleep at the end of September. She was only 9 years old but her back end had given up.
We asked the vet if there was any chance of recovery and were told that physio, drugs and rehabilitation might work. We then asked if she would be in any pain. We were told that she would be in constant discomfort. That made our minds up.
It is the worst decision a dog owner has to make but you do what is right for the dog, not yourself. Even writing this makes me teary!
We took a couple of days to think about what to do next but within a week I had tracked down a long-haired GSD pup, I spent every waking minute thinking about and searching!
I saw a lot of pups and it would have been so easy to home the first one I saw but I had to have the right dog.
She is sat at my feet now, snoring. She's only 6 months old and a real handful but definitely worth it. The best thing we did was to get a new dog. It will never replace the one you lose and it would be unfair to expect it to but it certainly helps.
All part of owning a pet unfortunately.0
