i feel your pain, a little over a week ago we had to go through the same with our sharpei (11 yrs) it all happened so quick, her falling ill, i've questioned myself since then "did we do the right thing?" the comments of people agreeing you did the right thing is making me feel a little better even though my heart is still breaking,

Hey guys, once more many many thanks for your support. I can now write with a bit more perspective, what shocked me about yesterday was just how quickly Flint deteriorated, on Monday night he was perfect (albeit slow). I fed him Tuesday morning before work which he ate first thing, I get home from work Tuesday afternoon 3pm and he couldn't stand to relieve himself ( I had to hold him up). By Tuesday night he was panting very heavily wouldn't eat and would only drink if brought to him.

I stayed awake through the night with him, was sick at 04.30 hrs, with a heavy heart both my wife and I had to go to work, thankfully we were both that upset that we took the rest of the day off. Thank the lord we did as it gave us a few last precious hours together with " Our baby".

There was no chance of getting him to the vets without causing stress so we called a vet out who gave us the grim news. In my heart I knew, I could see the tiredness in my boys eyes, he didn't even flinch whilst the lovely vet examined him.

Anyway his final peaceful moments were spent in his favourite bed whilst his mum and dad cuddled him. Then he slept!!!!

God bless!

Lost my old boy on 27th August and still ball my eyes out every now and then..... but I'm also able to smile at all the wonderful times we shared.

It does get easier Flint - one day at a time.

(love the Spike quote btw :)).

It definately does get easier, and the best bit about that is that you can remember the happy times rather than the sad ones. They do get right inside your hearts don't they, and you never replace them, any new pups/dogs just mean that your heart has to get bigger to hold another one

It's never right,to wait till we [the humans] are ready. How can it ever be the right time to loose your best friend? You did what was best for your boy.Not left him to suffer,so that you had a few more days.We owe it to our furbabies,to let them go with as much dignity as possible. They have devoted their lives to us,as we have loved them.In time, the pain will lessen,it never goes away, and you will remember the many wonderfull times you had together. And be thankfull for them. For in giving our love to any living thing,we leave ourselves wide open to the pain of loss,as surely as the joy of companionship as devotion.I'm sorry for your loss,Take Care,my thoughts and prayers are with you.I don't know if you know the story of rainbow bridge,if not it might give you comfort.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
What matters most is how well you walk through the fire
• Am so sorry for your loss..... We've all been through it and will go through it again countless times in out lives. Each one of our friends is special and will welcome us when our time comes....

How lovely.

We say the same thing about "our little girl" and always say things like "Where's your Mama" or "Daddy's home" and now I know it's not just us that say things like this.

Many thanks for taking the time in this most difficult of period to tell your story Flint. When decisions of this magnitude are made, it's nice to tell and share your pain with your "friends"
That's my mutt in the picture above.

I agree with the others, I think you know when the time comes. It's so heart breaking. We lost one of our cats last November, she died after a short illness (1 week). I felt she went before her time (she was nearly 12) but I also found comforting that her illness was only that short. I still miss her terribly and just thinking about her brings tears to my eyes every time. I'm sure Flint had the best life and he'll be forever grateful. That's the hardest thing about pets - letting them go.
• I have been comforted by some replys.

My gorgeous boy was PTS yesterday. He was 8 yrs old (he is in my avatar)

I feel devastated and it just keeps going round my mind did I do the right thing. Should I have kept him going that bit longer despite him being very poorly.

I cant at the moment think or concentrate on much else.

My thoughts are with you as well at this time
