RIP my beautiful boy!

I'm sorry for this post guys I just needed to pour out some very raw emotions right now. My German Shepherd dog of 10 1/2 years has just been taken away from my house about an hour ago after being PTS by the vet.

Flint was 10yrs and 7 months old, up to Monday of this week he was I thought perfectly fine, eating drinking and thoroughly enjoying his daily afternoon walk through the woods. Then yesterday I came home from work and he couldn't walk, kept collapsing and would not eat. I stayed awake through the night with him, cleaned up his sick at 04.30am this morning, i had to work today but thankfully both my wife and I took half day holiday to be with him. At 3 pm we called the vet to home, she was very nice and basically gave us the facts as she could see them. To me he was tired and wanted to go. At 4.25 the vet administered the drugs whilst we cradled him. Right now I am absolutely devastated, I finish work normally at 2pm and the afternoon used to be all about me and my boy having a walk. I know this will pass but right now I feel crap.

Did we do the right thing by our boy?

Thanks for reading.:A

  • What a shame. Been there and know exactly how you feel, and how devastating the decision can impact on your lives. We questioned our decision so many times and whatever anyone says on here, you will too; but if you have alleviated suffering, and taken expert advice, and know that you have given him a good life........... Nothing more constructive to say than that, best wishes to you.

Sorry to hear of your lose. I know how profound it can be to loose a pet you get so attached to them
  • So sorry to hear about your loss, you and your wife must be absolutely devastated.

My thoughts are with you xx
  • I'm sorry to hear of your loss, I really am. I'm, unfortunately, another one who has gone through this pain and do know how you are feeling. You are right, it will pass with time, you just have to take each day as it comes and try to think of the great years you had with him. Those memories will get you through until doesn't hurt so bad.

You did the right thing by your boy, of course you did, you ended his pain and suffering. That is the final, most important gift we must give to our beloved pets.

    Thinking of you xx

I'm so sorry to hear this - I know how devastating it is.

What was the diagnosis? My sister's GS had to be put to sleep at a similar age and it broke the kids' hearts.
  • Sending you hugs.
I know how you feel as I went through it when I had to make the same decision for my rescue pony Polly. I felt so guilty as I felt that she still had the will to live but unfortunately her body just couldn't handle life any more. I replayed the event in my head again and again. But I knew she was at peace and no longer in pain.
Rest in peace your lovely dog, you did the right thing for him

  • Sending our love and best wishes at this hard time, we to lost our Dobi x who was 10 1/2 this May and he was fine one minute and seriously ill the next minute. We had to make the hard decision ( but best for him) to end his suffering just a couple of days after he fell ill.
It is hard but things do get easier.
He loved coming down to Weymouth with us on holidays and we are there now so lots of memories from when he was last here in March this year.
( the tears are welling just thinking about it)
    BIG ((((hugs)))) to you all
