You posted this a week ago. The supermarket will have already written off its costs and many more incorrect deliveries/breakages/wastage.

Keep it, drink it, enjoy it. And stop worrying about it. ;)
  • I had a similar thing with Tesco a while ago. When I unpacked my shopping one Sunday morning I had acquired a large joint of beef, chicken etc. I phoned Customer services, told them about the extras I'd received and pointed out that the driver had only just left so he could easily return and pick it up. They apologised for the error and said I could keep the meat. I often wondered if someone was without their Sunday lunch
  • It was accepted in the belief it had been ordered - so it wasn't stolen and you did try to notify the shop! So keep it and accept it as an early Christmas pressie!!
  • You've got a record of making the phonecall, I would suspect?

If they are so desperate to collect their £40 worth of booze, they should have picked up the phone.

You've made the effort, the ball is in their court.

I find it almost laughable that one person posting claims he/she spots 20p errors in the supermarket bill. That sounds like a complete exaggeration to me and devalues their opinion to worthlessness.
I find it laughable that you came on a Money Saving Forum and posted that. 20 pences soon add up, and we too found we'd been overcharged after a trip to Tesco - not very subtle to charge us £1.25 for several items when the packaging all clearly said £1! No exaggeration here either - just common sense.

As for the Merlot, I agree with the people who've said that reasonable attempts have been made to inform the store of their error, and why should the original poster be expected to go out of their way and spend their own money on petrol to return the bottles to the store?

:o I was in a similar situation 2 years ago. I was charged for what I had ordered, but they brought me double everything. As it was Christmas that meant 2 bottles of port, not one, 2 of sherry, 24 bottles of wine instead of 12....you get the picture. About £160 worth I hadn't paid for. When I realised what had happened, I rang CS immediately. I was told it was their mistake, not to worry and that I wouldn't be charged. They certainly weren't going to send someone out to collect it.
I think as long as you have made the effort to let them know about the mistake, there's no problem.
  • Send them a letter (or email) stating what has happened. Give a deadline (say 14 days) stating that they can contact you to arrange a convenient time for collection (convenient for you rather than them). If they don't come back to you and don't collect by the end of the 14 days then consider it an early Christmas present. To be honest it's very unlikely they'll send someone out to collect it as it would probably cost them more than the wine.

If it was me I would continue to try and contact the supermarket providing it was not a premium rate number such as 0844, 0845 or 0870.

Personally I would give it back, why ? Because I'm too honest for my own good and it would niggle at me for days on end, pretty boring outlook I'm sure you'll agree.

But if you want to keep it don't fret, just give a bottle away to someone else who you think would be cheered up by a nice bottle of wine eg. postie, shopping delivery man, bin men, an old neighbour etc...you didn't order it so really you don't need it :)

I had a similar thing happen to me a few months ago. I had 6 bottles of Lemonade delivered with my shopping. When I queried it with the delivery driver. he said "it was in with your shopping" I was not charged for it and to be honest I kept it. Nothing has ever been said about it but a thought came to me a bit later that it was probably meant for someone else and had been put in with the wrong shopping! So somebody will have rung the store and complained. No doubt it was written off and with the large amount of deliveries they do everyday, I doubt they would have missed it anyway. I'm not basically dishonest, and had it been something of greater value, say 6 bottles of red, I would have rung the store. But, then again, as I love red..................I wonder!
