Well well well - that's never happened before

My renewal premium from my current insurance company has come through £40 cheaper than any of the quotes I have got from the comparison sites!

    <<faints in shock!!>>

Wow and I always thought that was a Fairy Tale :rotfl::rotfl:

Hmmmm I quite fancy the idea of £100 grocery challenge. Really ought to be do-able if I can get H on board. We've got loads of meat in the freezer (admittedly H won't eat half of it cos he doesn't like it but tough he's in the minority ;)) I fancy a cottage pie for the weekend so that will use up the last of my bag of spuds.
Do I have to count the milk I have delivered by the milkman as I pay that by DD once a month?

    Sigh.

Just spent a delicious half hour at lunch time starting my cross stitching project which I need to complete this weekend (if possible) for my friend's birthday. I was prepared for this to raise some questions from my colleagues, and I am always happy to answer them. They seem to think I am some kind of alien because I enjoy cross stitching and making things for people. One of the responses was "Why don't you just buy her something?" and another was "I didn't think you were 80 next birthday" and "Wow, with that and your new sewing machine, you really need to get out more." How rude!! I now feel like I am some kind of oddity. Why can't people just accept that everyone is different and get on with it? :(

On the upside... I have finished cross stitching the roses on the teacup... next step, the forget-me-nots!! :) But that will have to wait until this evening. I have three hours of sitting with these people pretending i get on with them and have things in common with them. And I really, really don't. :(

If I don't get back here later, have a wonderful weekend one and all and i shall see you on Monday! :D

They are NOT overrated. :D iPads are really nifty bits of kit, easier to use than a laptop and lighter too. They are not meant to be big workhorses. iPad 2 starts at just £399 for basic wifi version, so cheaper than iPad 1 on release. Due to my OH's background we have only ever had Apple in our house, PC's do my head in !!!! Long live Apple Mac's I say.

    Proud owner of an iPad.
I've got one too. Not crazy about typing on it, but love the fact that it is instantly on. I left it behind when I was travelling over the last couple of weeks and regretted it. On short flights, by the time my laptop has booted up it's time to shut it down. If I'd taken the iPad, despite the annoying keyboard, I'd have got work done on the plane.

No travel for a month now, so I want to concentrate on the house and garden for a bit and get my life back in balance.

Like EH I am attempting to get the freezers emptied -I have three, and have managed to nearly empty the chest freezer, but need to do some careful meal planning (and invite people over!).

I am lucky - my insurance is cheap, i only have a Clio.

Was £195 last year, GoCompare etc were coming up about £265 (up to £14,000!!!!) but my renewal from elephant.com was emailed today and it's £225! Wooo! I think I know what I'll be going for.

How do you make it through a whole month on Groceries on £100? I think I have had weeks where I've spent more...

I will be in awe of anyone who succeeds! I might have a go at £200 though. That would be good for me :) And no - I don't think DD's count on the challenge or on NSDs :)

Failed at that NSD malarchy as well - woke up late and had to buy sandwiches..

I will get on with this saving thing one day - I WANT TO MOVE HOUSE!

Crickett, you are not an oddity - your colleagues are exceptionally rude! Whatever they think of your hobbies, those are just stupid childish comments that they should have kept to themselves if they can't think of anything nice or sensible to say/ ask. Really.. it's not you, it's them.

Oh Crickett - aren't they rude! Poke them in the eye with your needle :)

I do my crafty things at work at lunch time, and most people just want to see the picture to see what it's going to look like and then come back to check how I am getting on.

I did get some funny looks when I was knitting my pirate before christmas - but I guess that's understandable. He had blue legs and a red and yellow stripey jumper :)

Oh, and come on - show us the photo :)

Don't tempt me to violence...it would not take much more for me to lose it.

I will take a photo of it when it is done, along with the magazine pattern it should look like! I have taken it from my "stash" of patterns and stuff, and it looks lovely. My friend and I always have a cup of tea when we meet...so a lovely floral teacup seems perfect as a coaster! :D

I was years older than most of my colleagues and I remember once mentioning that I was making some curtains to be met with looks of utter incomprehension and 'why don't you just buy some?' So I know how you feel.

However I contented myself with looking at them and thinking 'ten years from now, I bet you will also have HOBBIES That's if you've grown up by then'.

And because I had useful hobbies, I didn't blow all my salary on going out and was able to save which meant that when the redundancies came round I bit their hand off and took early retirement. And all of them looked at me enviously and said bitterly 'You're so lucky to be able to retire' I tried not to look smug. Honest, I did try.
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Crickett, it really is them not you! I reckon people have just never learned how to pay each other compliments sometimes :) So instead of saying 'wow, that looks really interesting!" they say 'urgh, this is strange, it's not what I do, must quickly say something witty and slightly disparaging about it'. Happens all the time - and sadly, people often do it towards their partners about their hobbies ('he's always watching that stupid football, just a load of men running round in a field', 'what are you messing about with that old car for, it'll never work' etc etc...)

I like to think people *are* interested really, they just don't want to be seen as being slightly out of the ordinary themselves, so don't want to be seen to show an interest. In situations like that (and I've been in rather a lot!) I usually put a bit smile ( a genuine one, not one like I've got toothache) on my face, and say 'well, I might have thought that once, but actually, I really love it, I love seeing the flowers emerge as I work, it gets me away from the computer screen, and I find it really calming to sit down and listen to some music and do it in the evening with a glass of wine, or it's really nice to do it while watching something on the tv, or I have a couple of friends who do it and we like to do it together and chat'.

Occasionally I find that people say 'oh, I used to do things like that' or 'I'd love to have the patience', or 'I never knew how'... and you can end up with a few converts :D

(and I'm only 30, and regularly have a crafty evening with friends (of similar ages!) - often we end up repairing holes in our trousers rather than anything more creative! :rotfl:)

And if all else fails - if they're the kind of person that can't give you a good opinion, then they're the kind of person whose good opinion isn't worth valuing.

If you see what I mean :D
