Fantasia, so sorry to hear about your DSS. I concur with everything everyone has said about the experience the army will have given him, but I can also empathise with the poor lad being utterly gutted too.
Positive vibes for you and him.
Having a really good Friday so far, despite being utterly exhausted and wanting my bed!!
Just had a meeting with the Dean of the School I look after and not only did she agree with whatever I said about the budget, she also told me that I have done fanatstic work and that getting the bottom line from 39% of income to 53% of income in three years was mostly down to me pushing and hauling the management team along for the ride.It is nice to be recognised and appreciated!!
Have another meeting to go to now, which is likely to be boring and rather turgid. But I don't care now.
Oh, and it is a GORGEOUS spring day.Loving it.
Positive vibes to everyone."A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort"Herm Albright 1876-19440 -
Ace news Crickett and NL, no I dont do big knickers! Neither does my mum even. She says she's far too young for such things (she's 66) and that as soon as she goes into them she will also have to start with lots of other old lady things ie perms, sensible shoes and mid calf length pleated skirts!!!!!! (Apologies to anyone who wears them) X'The road to a friends house is never long'0

Fantasia My brother grew up wanting nothing other than to be a Royal Marine like his dad. Went to join up at the first opportunity after spending 2 years training. His friend decided to join up with him. He passed everything with flying colours, the interview, the medical, the fitness test everything. Even the major came to the house and checked out his bedroom and interviewed the whole family. Then his medical records showed that he had a skiing accident at 14 and had to have an operation on his knee so they turned him down. He was devastated. Even more so when his best friend got in and went on to be in the SBS. It took him ages to get over it. But he did. For now be angry (out of sight of him) but just be there for him. My friend locked herself in her flat for a week and drunk herself silly when she didnt get into the police force. All you can do is let him deal with it in his own way and stand by to pick him up when he is ready. As Maty says there may be other avenues open to him. How about private security jobs (he might end up guarding a celebrity as my brothers friend did when he came out of the marines. Cant say who but he arrived in LA just around the same time as a particularly high profile couple who like fashion and football;))
Missed the picture, my camera - which is usually on my desk because I am transferring pictures for work, was missing. Still not found it. Damn - it would have been a good shot for the challenge this week. Sorry EH think I missed the deadline again.
Nah - long deadline on this one! I noticed that participation (mine included) was slowing/dropping off, so thought that a few with longer deadlines, and urging people to take part, might work.
Fantasia once things have settled down a bit why not suggest to your DSS that he might look towards Ambulance Service, Fire Service or Police? All of them require similar levels of discipline and high personal standards, the fire service in particular, and it may be that the problem with his foot/feet won't be an issue there so long as he can prove that his general fitness is good.
Crickett :T:T:T for constructive and positive meetings! As you say, good to be appreciated. That is a lesson that my old company would have done well to learn!
Was determined to have an earlier night last night, and actually made it to bed for 11pm, only for MrEH to decide to leave the light on and read for another hour! He wasn't too popular I can tell you! he saw the rugby club physio yesterday evening - and has now been "officially" told what he wouldn't believe when I said it, namely that he is definitely out for the rest of the season and it is going to take an indeterminate period of time for the internal bruising to heal itself. Could be weeks, could be months. In any case, now it is definite that he's not going to be daft and try playing again this side of our holiday I can at least feel safe in going ahead and booking our ferry tickets so that is a nice pleasurable job to do today!I also intend to take up the Glamour magazine subscription offer for 6 issues for £3 - I enjoy reading the magazine but can't usually justify paying £2 a copy for it at the moment (although I made an exception for this months, with the Clinique freebies with it!) so I feel that the subscription is a good deal for a small monthly treat.
Regarding the census, I seem to recall seeing somewhere that this time they are actually intending to clamp down and potentially take action against anyone putting "funny" religions in, so possibly putting druid, jedi etc may not be such a good plan!🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡

See, this is what confuses me. To my mind, being a Druid is a religion. Pagan might be a better way to put though, especially if you are a practising one.
I love reading about the resurgence of the pantheistic and druidic traditions. I have loads of books about it. I can tell you, when one of our mates came round for dinner, and he happens to be a Catholic priest, his eyebrows were raised just a touch!!I think he was a little panicked. :rotfl: But I told him "How can I understand my religion without understanding others?" and then showed him my books on Islam and Hinduism and Judaism and Buddhism and Ba'hai'ism and Zoanastrianism. He got quite into the Buddhism book!!
What can I say, Comparative Theology is one of my hobbies!
Oh, and my second meeting was fun and most importantly... short!!"A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort"Herm Albright 1876-19440 -
I used to give up using the car for Lent
Now that would be a good idea for me, I used to cycle absolutely everywhere but have got lazy recently (difficulty of carrying a small girl plus all her and my supplies for the day plus shopping etc). But this week I had to make a bit more of an effort as my car was in the process of being fixed - and combined with the lovely weather it was a real treat - had time to admire the violets along the roadside (yes even on the ring road, amongst all the litter ), saved petrol money, environmentally friendly, good exercise for me and I even found a couple of useful things dropped on the road, so an all-round gain!
And I have now fixed my car, it starts like a dream, so saved a bit of money there too and also feel quite ridiculously pleased with myself :j
Lovely sunshine here, washing on the line, a bit of work to do then a few errands so better get on with it.
Hope everyone has a good day - and it's great to see all the positive suggestions on here0 -
Thank you everybody, I knew the matrix would give me the right idea's for moving forward, and also the reality that all is not lost. Am sure it will dawn on DSS soon but for the time being we are allowing him a week to reach acceptance (he knows its real, but is just coming through the denial bit). And then we can ploough on with trying to forge a way forward for him.
I actually thought the army were leaving him high and dry, but next week will be spent looking at his options, learning how to construct a c.v. with all his experience of the past 18 months and how to apply it all in civvy street, so thats a big load of my mind.
He arrived home this morning to collect a case and his suit ready for de-mob. He has a very defeated look in his stance and bearing, but I've arranged for him to speak to a Colonel friend of ours also, for a bit of morale boosting. After all this is NOT his fault, its medical not dishonourable.
Thanks again everybody, you are all superstars xxx0 -
Fantasia - Tell him to 'fake it until he makes it'!!! It will do him no good being slumped ... not only will he feel defeated, people will treat him with dis-respect and he will not breathe nor digest anything as he is compressing his internal organs.
He has nothing to be defeated about and everything to be PROUD about. If it will do any good tell him that there are many opinionated older ladies with connections rooting for him (well the picture of tyhis might make hime smile)
Souk - Hurrah, I got it right you don't wear big knickers!!! (er, I wear those short things or high legs) Have never considered them since the woman two doors down displayed hers on the washing line many years ago. My grannie used to wear cotton ones with legs (like victorian bloomers). Whatever, hits the spot I say ... hope no offence caused by pictures running through minds of knickers, nor of lowering the tone on the first Friday in Lent ... think I'll get me coat
Have a good weekend y'all ... I'm off to sunny Chippenham and Cheltenham!!0 -

Lol i missed the bit about knickers, here we go again. Big knickers (belly warmers as they are called in Scotland) are OUT. No-one needs to wear big pants anymore lol. Not me anyway (each to their own. I love pretty underwear and now I've binned all the grey ones, they have been replaced with one's that make me feel a little risque, but they're lovely.
Down with "big knickers" I say . lol (pardon the pun).0 -
Love it Fantasia. Life's too short to wear big knickers X'The road to a friends house is never long'0

Holy Cow. I have just been watching the coverage of the Japanese earthquake and the Tsunami. Mother Nature sure is powerful isn't she?!
