Posts #1484, #1486, #1487 and #1499 .... someone better tell someone before someone accidentlally treads on them and they go off :o

There was an email address posted by MSE staff to send it to

    i think it's

    webmaster @ monseysavingexpert.com

but dont take my word. wait for someone to confirm it correct.

Uh-oh! Danger: typo in email address!

(I've de-activated the email link in the quote here)

Obviously a genuine typing mistake in this instance, but that's an inadvertent example of another scammer trick that we all have to look out for: email addresses or website addresses that are almost (but not quite) identical to real domain names. It's extremely common for scammers to register 'mistyped' domain names in the hope of trapping the unwary. monseysavingexpert.com does exist (whois), and let's just say that I'm not going to risk visiting it to find out whether it's a reputable website or not..

Always double-check what you're clicking on, and if at all possible, only use links from your bookmarks or emails from your addressbook (or type them directly very carefullly!).

Did anybody get a pop up from MSE (when logging into the forum) asking if you received the spam email???
I got it, I also got an email telling me I had a PM - which contradicts MSE's claim that the only mail they send is the weekly money tips email. Obviously they forgot that vBulletin automatically sends out mail on their behalf, to notify about both PMs and posts to subscribed topics (if you've asked for them)

Am I safe having opened the MSE email but not the link??
You're fine. There's no malware in the mail, just a link to some.

It's certainly got a reputation:) it redirects to searchportal .information .com (spaces added for safety) which is in my unwanted-site-blocking HOSTS file with comment Panda.Spyware:Cookie/Searchportal

No, i did'nt spot the spelling mistake on the link, which just goes to show how naive you can be, and how easy it is.

I've had my standard reply back from webmaster, saying - we are unable to give one on one help, and we will put the answer on the site, so it looks like you are very much on your own on this site. So what do i do now, given i clicked to unsubscribe.

It says on the email - you have registered with Money expert. com, which i have'nt, or one of our associates -MSE ? ( likely to be the only one).
Which means my email address has definitely been ' passed ' or ' sold ' on, contravening the Data Protection Act.

It seems you are very much out on your own on this site, when things ' go wrong '

Thats great. Monseysavingexpert.com now has my email address, too.

  • Nice to see it was buried into the news below a few older stories. Quite clear that MSE are thinking of their reputation and PR in their statements and publicity to ensure they can't be accused of covering it up but not making it as public as they could or should.

The news story was, and still is, top of our news homepage - http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/

We also took the rare step of moving a news story to the main site homepage, where it remains

In addition, we PMd every member of the forum with an explanation, link to the news story and link to this thread.

I am actually astonished that anyone could possibly genuinely think we are hiding this!

  • I received this email about ten minutes ago, to the email address I use for MSE (and everything else - it's my main email addy). I joined the site back in 2007.

I have, however, already changed my email password, I did that first thing this morning, BEFORE I received the email. I opened it, but did not click the link.
