I had one but didn't open it and just deleted it, as it wasn't called MoneySavingExpert. I'm sick of weirdos emailing me viruses to download at my leisure, and then having to pay local computer shops £50 to fix them!

    sorry couldn't resist this.

    A) dont ever download something your unsure of
    B) get a decent free anti virus and you'll pay the £50 no more

I've never paid anyone anything for PC repairs. It's not hard either honest.. Youtube some vids to teach yourself some stuff and you never know you may learn something

  • Is it worth asking those who have had the email whether they have an MSE facebook account. I know I'm friends with lots of people through the competitions forum and add friends willy nilly to that facebook account. Some of our facebook accounts refer to our MSE username and once you're friends with someone, I suppose you can see their email address. This would mean that there's been no hacking at all - just a devious facebooker making out that they're an MSE'er and collecting that way. Just a thought!

What anti virus have you got that lets viruses in? I'd be worried.
  • I got one too dated 17th November but luckily I rarely read my emails & only checked when I received a pm from MSE Webmaster today. :money:

I joined in 2009 so I guess mine won't be any help.

I had one & i'm friends with a few MSE'ers on Facebook but I as I use a different email address for my Facebook than I do for MSE & that they sent the email to so I don't think that anyone on Facebook could be doing it.

  • Nice to see it was buried into the news below a few older stories. Quite clear that MSE are thinking of their reputation and PR in their statements and publicity to ensure they can't be accused of covering it up but not making it as public as they could or should.

I also think some people need to remember this site has people who earn salaries and make a lot of money from its existence. Why should they be any less accountable than a bank or supermarket. They shouldn't and are not in the eyes of the law.

What horrid things to say. I have seen nothing to support your statement that MSE are putting their reputation and PR at the forefront above resolving the issue.

I also know people earn salaries from this site. Good, they deserve to. I don't expect them to work for free. I equally save an awful lot of money because of their existence. Each year, following the advice of both staff and other users, I save hundreds of pounds. I paid my mortgage by being spurred on by this site. I claimed back my exit fee that had been changed midway through my mortgage. I found out about how cashback sites work and I get cashback on many of my purchases.

They could easily charge me a subscription and frankly I would probably pay it because I would save the fee many times over. Stop being so malicious though by suggesting it is somehow wrong staff here get paid. It is not wrong and they all help us.

not being funny, but there has been a thread about not giving out too much information on this forum, so we now know

you use all the ones highlighted, tell me anything on Amazon that you left a remark on that i might find interesting...

(obviously please don't reply about the last bit) but see how easy i could of narrowed down to find you...)

And i'm not being funny but I don't have this username on Amazon, nor any of the others, or even a partial name (which is not here anyway), and all passwords are different ;) I do know how to take basic precautions.

Nah. ButterBean (the username I set up for our babba when he was still within me!) is not referenced as such anywhere on facebook, yet we received an email that quoted this particular username.

A relative got the email, and not paying attention went to open it but the AV popped up and said not to.
  • Thanks for replying re: Facebook - t'is a relief to know it hasn't come through there. I think I'm going to make my email address on there private though and would urge others to do the same as it would be so easy to pretend you're an MSE'er and then have access to usernames/email addresses.

    Thank you.
