I agree re passwords and usernames. I have seperate passwords for sensitive/ financial info, like bank, amazon, facebook, email, Paypal, and then one for everything else as I can't remember a different one for every forum I visit.
A simple and more secure way around the can't-remember-lots-of-different-passwords issue is to have something that you base your password on, but which creates a different password for each site. For example, you could use the first letter of the site's domain name, followed by a specific word or phrase, then the last letter of the site's domain name. So if your specific word/phrase was "happy99", your MSE password would be:
mhappy99t
and your password for amazon would be:
ahappy99n
Obviously this is a very simple example, and you can make it as complex as you want - but even in a simple form, it's much better than using the same password for lots of different sites.0 -

Lately I have been changing the usernames around so it's not so easy to track me on the web.
Just common sense really!
not being funny, but there has been a thread about not giving out too much information on this forum, so we now know
you use all the ones highlighted, tell me anything on Amazon that you left a remark on that i might find interesting...
(obviously please don't reply about the last bit) but see how easy i could of narrowed down to find you...)0 -
Thats out of order
Why shouldnt Martin, his team etc be paid. Look at the scale of this site.. It couldn't be run from someones bedroom.
If people really believe MSE sold details then your either extremely paranoid or have nothing better to say about a site that has probably helped you in some way.
I'm not affiliated with anyone from here but they've helped me and i'm grateful. Splurting off with selling details is bang out of order and if you feel that way then don't bother logging back on
I haven't said they shouldn't but likewise they also need to realise that they are as accountable as the IT and management team of a bank or any other large scale business. If this was Tesco or RBS they wouldn't be getting the same reaction. There are situations where as websites grown the standards and expectations do and you can no longer use the doing people a favour card.
Also where have I said the details where sold? I do think though that part of the revenue generated from this site is based on indirect selling (i.e use me on your show/paper and I will give you access to such and such members).
Why don't you remember to read posts in future as both your accusations against me are false.0 -
Received mine yesterday. Stupidly opened the email, read it then deleted it after reailisng it was carp.
I didn't select or open the trojan link in the email. I presume that I have nothing to worry about but would be grateful if someone could confirm.
Thanks0 -

You'll be ok as has been mentioned previously but you say you realised it was CARP? Didn't you think 'hmm this is fishy!' :rotfl:0 -

Most posts on the suggestion has come from multiple posts by other memebers. Instead of requoting i decided to stick it one post so i apologise if you thought i was refering to you

Time for a new poll I think Martin - limited to those 30 or so who clicked "I joined the forum this year" which should be:
How many of you that joined the forum this year actually read the initial question and really did receive the rogue email? 1) Me 2) Doh!
I've got two accounts, this one registered pre-2010 which I received an email to, the other one registered in 2010 and no email received.0 -

I joined in 2008 and got one of these emails.
It was from business@moneyexpert.com (no "saving") and I hadn't looked at it and hadn't connected it to this site anyway. Funnily enough, I hadn't noticed that it had my user name from here in the subject line because the way my email panes are set up, any longish subject lines tend to be truncated - meaning that my user name didn't display until I widened the pane.
This is quite a breach of security really though I note that the passwords have not been compromised.
However, the email address I use for here does appear elsewhere on the web and so it would be possible for someone to see other info about me or my business. There's nothing that would compromise sensitive data though and nothing that would lead anyone to anything that I wouldn't want them to see.
Although users should ensure that at least their banking passwords are totally different and not possible to deduce, I do wonder if more banks should be taking security more seriously. With one of my accounts there is a small piece of hardware that generates a random number each time I log in. That random number is only accessible by putting in a PIN first. I know some banks now have card readers too but I think that there are still banks that need to play catch up.0
