Cripes!!! Who rattled your cage PhylPho?
As my username suggests, I was impersonated, and thousands of pounds were lost faster than the time it took to type your post.
Who deals in fraud and thousands of pounds on a daily basis? Banks, yes. Organised Crime yes. Bunglers No.
Why was I impersonated? Because in some way I was vulnerable to attack. Do I know how? Yes.
Am I the type you'd expect to be vulnerable to attack? No. Have I made mistakes with my security? Nope. Do I use Facebook? No. Can I service my own car? Yes and No. Has my computer been hacked ? ... Every day I hope not but everyday I wonder. Today of course I have wondered a bit more.A DOS attack is intended to incapacitate a site.0 -
I recieved my PM from the webbmaster, many thanks for that. To Martin and the MSE team, many thanks. I know you are all working like little beavers trying to sort this out.
I am not that computer savvy, but I do know to only a password once and not for every place i venture into. I did receive the email but it looked iffy so I deleted it, I didnt even read it.
I know nothing about hash or salt lol, in fact most of the posts in this thread have gone way over my head.
I am guessing that if the problem was bad enough to be unduly worried then surely the site would have been closed down until fixed. So until that time comes I shall just carry on as normal as one can.
Once again many thanks to the MSE team, you are doing a stirling job.

Just got said message and deleted it immediately! Thanx for the heads up!
I joined July 2010 and haven't received one -yet.
I will be watching for one now, though.
Got the forum message.
So now Linkedin has had this (twice), and now MSE. What or who will be next?
Rapidly becoming the case when it is not safe to click any link in an email. Even when it's from someone you know.
How lucky are we that scammers can't spell? How long before they master the english as she is spoke?0 -
i've just had a popup appear saying that i've just received an email from you (mse webmaster) and to click ok to read it. i clicked cancel and looked at my email box to discover nothing there.
At a guess, you are confusing a Private Message (PM) with an email. PMs are specific to the site, you don't (by default) get an email message.
If you look to the top of this page (or any) you will se a section saying
Welcome, <username> You last visited: <date/time> Private messages : Unread 1, Total 1.
Click on "Private Messages" to see your private message.

I received one yesterday, I opened it but was a little weary because it was from 'money expert' and not 'money saving expert'. I didn't click anything inside the email, but I did open another window and googled 'moneyexpert' which took me to the moneyexpert website. After that I 'junked' the email and forgot all about it, until I came on here. Hopefully I've not infected the computer just by opening it.Planning on being debt free by Sept 2015Sept 2014: £4396.16Feb 2015: £2150.070

I haven't recieved the email. That may not be very useful to know really if you just want to know who HAS got one
but I was just wondering if it was worth trying to pin down if the people who have got one are limited to joining in a certain year/month/week/day rather than just 'joined before 2010' and 'joined this year'. And maybe even what sort of email address they have to see if it's just/mainly hotmail addresses or something.
Then again, I'm not in anyway 'techie' (doesn't show does it?) so have no idea if any of that is relevant or not :undecided
