This attitude helps nobody. Apparently Martin Lewis and his team must live sad, pathetic lives since they seem to be concerned about these emails. Yes delete the email, but don't blame people for being concerned that their email address has been gathered via their forum name.

Anyone foolish enough to go clicking any old link in an email shouldn't be allowed within 10 feet of a computer.

Yah, there's been a leak.. so what. It's not like when the Government lost everyones information.. it's an email address, they won't be able to get your NI number, bank details or your parents address. All they have is an email address to which they attempt to get you to install a virus.

The world isn't ending. It's a dodgy email that everyone on the entire internet would experienced at some point. Move on.. get over it.

  • They don't work with salted hashes.

    I never knew that.
  • I too got the email and opened it.At first i thought it was from this site(very similar name) but didnt click any links.I cant explain why i didnt click links but i think it was just that i found it most unusual for MSE to send an email promoting something.

...then i found this thread. It seems to me that to stay safe just dont trust any emails except friends/family and even then be careful

Yes but then you haven't mentioned "rainbow tables" :)
    Salted hashing renders those ineffective...

I just had the pm about all this and found the spam email in my junk folder. I have just deleted it. I joined in 2008 if the mse team need that information.

I don't think most people here are worried about spam going to their e-mail address. I'm sure most people already receive tons of spam - that's what filters are for. What people are worried about is the hackers obtaining a combination of their username, e-mail address and password (albeit in a hashed form, with posters here not quite in agreement about how easy it would be to obtain the actual passwords). Some people may have used these to sign up for other sites. At best, that means the hackers could impersonate them. More seriously, other sites may contain personal information. In the worst case, people may have used similar login details for banking or other important sites. Now, I'd agree that many of those cases of shared passwords would be unwise, but the fact is people may be in that situation, which is why they are worried.

Without sounding rude clearly you haven't read the MSE teams responses.

This email was just "generic" spam under the false pretense of coming from MSE.

MSE have CLEARLY stated that passwords would not have been taken

Your log on information is completely safe and you can change your password if you feel the need to.

People have just blown this well out of proportion. MSE are doing what they can but at the end of the day this is a FREE site and extremely helpful. Infact i've never known a site where so much information is in one place.

I don't know Martin and if i'm honest i didnt know he existed until i joined here through a google search, but from what i've seen, the man knows his stuff and has done a fantastic job providing this forum facility. Again if he wanted to he could save himself a headache and just press the off button and leave us without this site.

He trying to sort it out - Not because it's morally right but he clearly cares about his reputation and about the community that he's brought together.

Personally i just don't think MSE have done anything wrong. I think they've done a fantastic job and i really hope they continue to do so
