I had this email to this account.

It also was sent to my website domain name email which was for example mse@mywebsiteaddressdomain which the first part of it doesn't actually exist and is not the main one but gets caught automatically as I own the domain name. I used it to register an account that I wanted to keep anon as an untrusted ex work colleague started snooping on me on here! Hi Angela if you are still stalking me, lol.

    HI
Got one this afternoon joined in 2009 but have not been on for at least six months and had to get a reminder about my password this afternoon and then got a eamil from them at six this evening.

It's funny you should say that....further to saying i hadn't recieved one a little while ago - Well i decided to log out and log back in on here (as it's a private home network i usually use the 'Remember Me' button) and within about 10 mins of doing so i received the email.

Soooo does this mean it could have something to do with logging in? Maybe?

You may have something there - I've been logged in a while (haven't actually physically signed in for a week or more) and I haven't had one of these emails - just checked inbox and spam, nowt there.

  • I got one too. Outlook marked it as SPAM and I deleted it. The only place I use the name published is this site. Something's been compromised?

    Stay safe; look after yourselves.

I didn;t think I had one, but just checked Junk Folder and it's there - arrived at 18:30

I logged on at around 5am today, and have been on and off all day.

  • Unfortunately, I opened the spoof email, However I did not 'click' on the Download option, Am I safe ?

Yes you are safe as long as you didn't download the actual ZIP file (that weblink). Unfortunately, by the time I had set up a separate 'safe' system to download the file to take a look the website had been off-lined so the zip file was no longer available. If you opened the ZIP file you *may* be infected, if you ran the program contained within the ZIP file then I'd guess you are infected.

However, just opening the email and reading it will not infect you.

I have 2 user names on MSE. One has not been actively used since I changed to the new one in around 2009.

The old (pre-2009) user name has had the email whilst the new user name has not. Perhaps this helps to narrow down when the breach occurred.

This is the same for me too; except my old username (the one detailed in the email) is pre 2007.

What is odd though is that the email address they have used is the one attached to Martin's weekly email subscription which I thought was a different database from the forum,
  • I have just received a second one...to an older user name linked to the same e-mail address.

One of my usernames is only used on MSE, so the issue originates from this site.

Go to User CP (green bar towards the top of the page). On the left select Edit Your Details, then the top option is to edit your e-mail :)
