It contains my full name, and I don't like that it is now connected to my username on here. I think I've read that MSE does not delete accounts and the associated information. I really feel that option must be offered to anyone who has received one of these emails should they wish.
Right?......
So your email contains your full name.. I could find that information if i tried hard enough
Just because you have recieved a spam email it doesn't mean your a target to fraud.
I don't know about all you lot but i use an email address that is solely used for forum sign ups etc.
If you use your main email and some have used work emails your asking for trouble.

Here's mine. It's addressed to my forum user name and was sent to a one-time e-mail address that I only use on this forum and nowhere else.
The forum e-mail list was nicked or used in 2009 (see this thread). It may be the same data that was stolen on that occasion that has been used again this time?
bonzer,

Yes I had one of these it went straight to my junk mail, I noticed it was odd because usually emails from mse go to my inbox. I noticed my username on the email too, but it was emptied straight away.0

Does anyone know if passwords have been harvested aswell?
Ok so you've now been on 3 times to state you've had a spam email.. congratulations..
honestly without sounding pedantic you're all blowing this well out of proportion.

For those with Google Mail (GMail) accounts you may be interested in a little known feature.
You can use instead of signing up to stuff with yourname@gmail.com you can use yourname+somethingunique@gmail.com. Any email sent to that address will go to your normal gmail account but then you can instantly see if your email address has been stolen/sold. You can also use this technique to set up filters
Look, I can even do it myself! The email address is yourname@gmail.com!
I can't imagine why on earth Gmail even bothered with that pathetic attempt at an email alias... :rotfl:0 -

Did I say it made me a target for fraud? No. So you were a lot more computer savvy than me when you registered, bully for you. If doing what I have done is so "asking for trouble" then perhaps MSE should remind all members when they sign up??? I am not blaming MSE. All I have said is that I think we must have the option, for those that want it, of having our accounts wiped from MSE. I don't think that's asking too much. You never get a second chance to make a first impression.0 -
It's a pity this post can't be pinned at the head of every subsequent page of this thread.
It's also remarkable (well, to me at any rate) the sheer number of posters who want justice NOW! as well as explanation NOW!
And possibly, Martin Lewis's head on a plate.
Good job the overwhelming majority on here have the wits, and the patience, to allow MSE's Webbys to investigate -- though shame on all those vindictive posters with their various conspiracy theories who seem to have conveniently forgotten that this entire bloody thread wouldn't be here in the first place if MSE itself hadn't started it. . .
Actually I started the thread - MSE Dan just kindly edited it with an update and made me into a banner
However, I do think you're onto a winning marketing opportunity there. Replica heads on plates ... could be the must-have gift for Christmas 2011.
People who don't know a vast amount about internet security are going to panic at receiving an email like this, especially if they opened it and especially if they opened the zip file. It's understandable that they're worried and looking for an explanation, just as it's understandable that the MSE techies are too busy trying to dig out whatever the problem is to give a detailed explanation.Organised Birthdays and Christmas: Spend So Far: £193.75; Saved from RRP £963.76

But the issue is that everyone is blowing this way out of proportion.
It's spam and nothing more.
why would you want a new account? In all fairness it could happen tomorrow, next week, next year. If Sites like this had the time to nilly willy issue new accounts each time this sort of thing happened, the site would probably run out of server space.
If you feel violated then thats your problem but that spam email will only affect you if you click the link and even then i highly presume your antivirus will stop it in it's tracksIf Adam and Eve were created first
