If doing what I have done is so "asking for trouble" then perhaps MSE should remind all members when they sign up??? I am not blaming MSE. All I have said is that I think we must have the option, for those that want it, of having our accounts wiped from MSE. I don't think that's asking too much.
Don't worry you are not alone, i too have an email address (which i used when i registered on here) that contains my full name.
At the time i didn't give it a second thought.
I haven't yet received an email though0 -
So you think spammers are so stupid that they don't know that simply stripping out the Stuff between the + sign and the @ sign (in your instance '+somethingunique') will give your real Gmail address?
Look, I can even do it myself! The email address is yourname@gmail.com!
I can't imagine why on earth Gmail even bothered with that pathetic attempt at an email alias... :rotfl:0 -
Just an update, logged in as Frank a short while ago and still have not received the fake email into that account.:heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls

But the issue is that everyone is blowing this way out of proportion.
It's spam and nothing more.
why would you want a new account? In all fairness it could happen tomorrow, next week, next year. If Sites like this had the time to nilly willy issue new accounts each time this sort of thing happened, the site would probably run out of server space.
If you feel violated then thats your problem but that spam email will only affect you if you click the link and even then i highly presume your antivirus will stop it in it's tracks
Yes but after I got the email I also got an email for Canadian pharmacy and im Canadian.. WTH its like they are watching me.. im going to put tinfoil on my windows

what software are you using ? Outlook or are you using Hotmail or Yahoo?
Just click the box to the left of the email and select delete.. !!!!!! it's gone. Just don't click the link in the email
Thankyou young man/lady I did what you told me to and it has gone, is that all I need to do ? many thanks0 -
I don't think it is a case of the Usernames being Leaked or Sold, all someone has to do is click on Community > Members List, and there is the list of every single member of the site to cut and paste.0

People who don't know a vast amount about internet security are going to panic at receiving an email like this, especially if they opened it and especially if they opened the zip file. It's understandable that they're worried and looking for an explanation, just as it's understandable that the MSE techies are too busy trying to dig out whatever the problem is to give a detailed explanation.
It's misleading to imply that only people who don't understand internet security would be worried, I understand it and it looks pretty obvious that MSEs databases have been compromised, and from some of the other posts this isn't a one off. This spam email in itself isn't something to worry too much about but it's also quite likely people's passwords could have been taken, the explanation about 'double encryption' isn't reassuring in the least.
It's a good reminder though never to sign up to a site with a username/pass that you use elsewhere, as poorly managed sites are liable to sell or fail to protect data as has happened here.0 -
