Why should children be a privelege of wealth? Victorian children to wealthy parents were raised by the hired help. If they were lucky they may see Papa for a few moments in the evening should it be convenient. How times have changed. Meanwhile mum logs on to the interweb to chunter about how much the child care is costing her.

Parenting skills in this country are abyssmal. Walking through a subway at the weekend a mum and her toddler come walking in the opposite direction. The toddler, recognises the echo in the subway and begins to shout; to me the child is learning, exploring his world, being a scientist; mum sees it differently, the child is being bad and gets a rollocking and slapped legs. I can't count the number of times I've seen children bend down to pick something up or look at something, a stone, a twig, an insect, only to be told by the parent "ew, get away from that." Then there's the pacification of misbehaving children with sweets and chocolate, you're the adult, assert yourself.

Toddlers throw tantrums. Deal with it. If someone's toddler is having a paddy in the supermarket, it is not bad parenting, it is what toddlers do. If you find it annoying, tough $*@t. Way back when mini Orpheo was a very little girl, she decided to try the stampfooties when Mrs Orpheo denied her some sweets. Mrs Orpheo ignored her case of the stampfooties, not so the lady behind, who said, "Oh, I'll buy her some sweets." You can imagine Mrs Orpheo's choice words to this foolish interloper.

Children don't ask to be born. You have kids, you support them. If you don't want kids, fine, there's one sure fire way of ensuring that you don't have them and that means keeping it in your pants.

Don't like other people's children in a family pub or restaurant? Go to one that doesn't have a children's license then precious.

Oh And you don't need to smack your kids. No. No you don't, not if you are an assertive parent you don't. Yes, when you were smacked it did do you harm, it made you think that smacking your kids was OK. Lost your temper and smacked them? Stress makes you violent. Smacked them calmly and coldly? Sinister. Learn to say no and mean it. Have consistent rules and sanctions, consistent is the key. make sure that you always control their priveleges and they know that they can be taken away.

Kids sense how adults feel about them, older kids more so. If you despise them they'll know. It is about time we took care of our children and took responsibility ourselves rather than passing on the responsibility to the state. I shouldn't have to teach them right from wrong, that's your job. Take some time off work.
