Overall, yes. I was given a clip round the lughole and told to shut up if I carried on in public with tantrum and had respect for my elders and other peoples stuff 'drilled' into me from a very early age. Also had a fair few hidings as well when I did some pretty stupid stuff (eg. putting stones on the railway tracks, lightning fires in the woods). Couldn't sit down for an hour.

I'm sure all the anti-smacking brigade will be flooding out of the woodwork at that but looking back I don't regret any of it. It taught me in a VERY effective way the difference between right and wrong along with consequences of my actions from the 100dB ear bashing that always followed.

That is called reactive parenting, I do proactive parenting which pretty much negates having to smack.

All a clip round the ear or a smack on the bum taught my middle son was that if you was annoyed with something someone else had done, then whack them...his behaviour improved once ex husband had left and I could start doing proactive parenting.

I am a firm believer of children getting up to mischief because they don't know the behaviour expected of them in advance, if they don't know where the line is, how do we expect them to stay within that line?

So you can either smack them once they have crossed that line (which with very young children, a completely invisible and more often than not, a very vague or not known line) and parent through fear or inform them where the line is (or in other words, the expected behaviour) and keep reiterating those boundaries time and time again and proactive parent.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Well said. P!sses me off no end when I hear the irresponsible "parents" of the little darlings just laugh and announce "they're just being kids" like that somehow justifies it. You can't go anywhere anymore without out of control brats ruining riot or causing mayhem. Kids should be confined to houses or specific kid areas like playgrounds until the parents learn to control them and teach them to respect their elders and other peoples property.

I actually don't like children  which is why I don't have any, and I do agree that parents should be more considerate of those that don't have children when they take them out.

My nightmare is a supermarket full of parents and kids  I avoid them like the plague, puts me off enjoying doing my shopping it does...

It does appear that children were better behaved 30 or 40 years ago.

    So were adults.

    What???
There's more than the 2 reasons the MissMoneypenny lecture covered???

A lot more reasons than 2:D such as some parents putting themselves and what they want, first.

Or some parents having children just because they can, but the child/ren have to fit into the parents lives.

It's not really a lecture JonnyBravo, it's more of a, if the cap fits then wear it.
RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.
Read the sticky on the House Buying, Renting & Selling board.

The other side is the middle class "right on" parents who will let little Poppy and Josh tear around running into things whilst discussing how their offpring are just expressing themselves.

Agree with the whole post, the ones that fit into the above category are also the ones who like to advertise the fact that they have children. They are typically detected due to their retardness, by having a "child on board" or "prince/princess on board" placard dangling from their rear window, whilst still proceeding to speed along the motorway at 90 in their MPV filled with kids.
Seriously, do you think your sign is going to have any effect on the driver behind apart from making them think you're a ....

I expect this is linked to the area you live Snooze. I don't think this is representative of the population as a whole.

e.g. Children&Parents in the area I live are very polite, where I grew up, not so much.

And what is this area I live in then, according to you? This will be interesting considering I've never said specifically where I am.

!!!!!!. You said that my hatred was because of the area I live in. Forgive me for pointing out the obvious, but one would need to know which area I live in in order to make such an assumption. So I am waiting Malcolm >>>>>>>>>
