Just spotted this thread. Here is what has happened to me the past four days or so. I have a new o2 Android phone and decided to top it up online. Using my Co-Op Debit Visa card, o2 only recognised it when I put "Electron" as the option did not like Visa Debit. Today I wanted to book tickets online for Buckingham Palace, the website mentions it does not accept "Electron" cards, I tried it anyway, lo and behold it rejected it, so I phoned and they accepted it over the phone. Been using the card for more than 18 months and it is only this past week that these problems have started.Paddle No 21 :wave:0

Hi all - I have also had this problem with my Co-op Visa Debit card so I have been doing a little digging and have found this.
The Co-op changed their electron card to a visa debit card around 2 years ago. Well before I opened my Co-op account last May. They advised the banking industry of their changes.
So far so good - BUT one bank that handles the processing of the card payments for retailers HASNT updated its databases. So firms like John Lewis, M&S, Shell and Debenhams are told by the bank that the card is an electron when it isn't!!!!
The bank in question is Lloyds TSB - I have taken the matter up with their Chairman who hasnt replied to me in 2 months (I dont think he will now!)
So its not the retailers fault (other than they are using a bank which is clearly incompetent!) really. I have also spoken to the Banking Ombudsman who isnt interested in investigating so I've sent my file to the Information Commissioner to see if there is a breach of the Data Protection Act.
Just remember - the Bank is trying to get you to use a Credit Card instead of your Co-op Visa Debit Card (which actually will only allow you to use it if you have the money!!) to make money out of you
Have you actually read the data protection act ? I don't see how a technical anomaly is a breech of data protection.0 -
FYI I have successfully done an online purchase with John Lewis using my Co-op visa debit card - goods safely in my possession.2019 MFW No. 74 £13700/£30000 (45.66%)
12k in 2018 No. 98 £6274.19/£18000 (34.85%)
BTL (start) £97440.00 (current) £68000.00
Residential (start) £275000.00 (current) £268000.000 -
Thats good to know iquit. Still can't order from Debenhams or M&S though
This is why I got the prepaid cashplus card so I can top it up and use it for this kind of thing.0 -
Debenhams still not taking my Co-op card tonight. Am a bit peeved tbh as there was a promotion ending today which I won't be able to take advantage of now.0

Haven't read the whole thread so sorry if I've missed anything.
But I have used my Co-Op Visa debit at station machines and ticket offices with no problems. Even purchased a ticket on the phone with thetrainline.com last Friday and picked it up at S!!!!horpe ticket machine this morning, no problems. I thought the ticket machines were universal/national so don't understand the problem using them. When I joined, I needed a name. The forum members gave one to me...I am INAN

Adding nothing to the debate but love the fact that Scun*horpe is considered a (partial) obscenity:rotfl:.
It's not that bad a place surely?“Procrastination is my middle name....well it would be if I could be ar**d to contact Deed Poll."0 -
