are you clicking on electron in the pull down box??

I have managed to put £5 on my o2 money via coop electron (electron pull down box/card details/address) and then takes you to verified by Visa.

I think I may have spotted the issue, I tried when I couldnt login to my account and was told by the helpline to use the "gift" option, BUT when you use this option the pulldown doesnt include electron (see below)

But when I login (now i eventually can!) I see the pulldown options are different.

Thanks for helping me find this

I wasn't able to (or didn't want to get) a Barclays basic account because I have debts with Barclaycard.

I've managed to use my Coop basic account card to buy things online eg Amazon and Tesco Dircet and have used at Tesco pay at the pump but can't use it at Asda pay at the pumps.

It's annoying about Debenhams not taking it online as there are some things in the sale that I want to buy as Christmas presents.

Co-op is great, and arguably this is the fault of the retailers as well as Co-op,

The brand of a card is not relevant in a transaction so I dont think Co-op have any blame here. Co-op wont have input into whether other companies accept their brand of cards or not.

Generally retailers will decide which card types they want to accept based on the transaction fees charged for the various card types by the clearing houses.

This is why you will rarely see Amex as an option for payment, becuase they have massive fees to fund their cashback deals, and its the retailer who pays getting stung for ~5% of the transaction value.

    It is relevant here.

In this case Co-op have used a bin number range that was previously Electron rather than a straight Visa debit. This is why people are having problems with retailers that haven't updated their bin databases.

In comparison, when Barclays switched their basic account cards to Visa debit there wasn't this problem.

Retailers dont update bank id numbers, I would imagine thats the responsiblity of the payment service providers.

Doesn't matter whose responsibility it is. Retailer/provider/whoever.

The point is that with some retailers the Co-op Visa Debit is still seen by their systems as an Electron, whereas other banks issuing Visa debits on basic accounts have avoided such a stupid cock up.

  • Dont know if it is of any help to anyone but Nationwides basic account now comes with a Visa debit card, I have just opened one and have a terrible credit file I did not have any issues which I was pleased about. I have the card just waiting for the pin etc so not used it so far but it may be an option for others, then just keep your co-op accounts for a rainy day at some stage it will get better........................

I've got one as a fallback and have the updated card.

I've not tried it anywhere yet though......

But you did place blame on somebody, and since your views are respected here, this thread is full of people with misplaced complaints about retailers who 'havent updated their systems'

May as well carry on complaining to Debenhams and other shopkeepers who havent got any input whatsoever into resolving the matter. Good luck folks.

    Nonsense.

If a retailer wants customers to spend money with them, then the bottom line is that they should ensure that whatever internal systems they have, or payment provider they use, have things correctly in place.

If the problem is not in their systems, then as customers themselves they should be insisting that their service supplier or the banks sort their act out.

Clearly, some retailers are sitting on their hands and doing nothing.
