Looking to the Future ... My Mortgage Free Dream

DS1 had pack up too. He stayed till after lunch last week, and every day he was starving at about 2:30. I found out they have lunch at 11:45. We usually have it at 1 at home.
I put in sanwiches, an orange, a pot of jelly, and a squeezee yoghurt, and he said can I have more in please. I guess they are a lot more active at school. I think my plan might have to be a healthy snack straight after school to get them through to our dinner time as we normally eat about 6ish. I'm thinking I might stock up on stuff such as crumpets which are nice and quick but very filling for them. Otherwise all I'll hear is muuuuum I'm hunnngrrrreeeee.
It's hard knowing what to put in to be healthy. I found by the end of the week, he'd had too much fruit and I was worried he would end up with the runs. It's a fine balance.0 -
Well I put in a sandwich, cheese thing, harvest bar, large rice cake and a handful of grapes. She's such a slow eater that I don't think she'll get through all of that, but we'll see.0

I'm doing sums this morning and re-doing our SOA. Hmmmmm0
-
I haven't done ours since hubby had his tax rebate and his wages crept up a bit each month due to the change. I've been letting him keep the excess - no More!0

Well I've done about three SOA's this morning. I'm really unhappy at work so was looking to see if we could afford for me to give up my job without having another one. The good news is we can, but it would be really tight.
If we stay where we are we are supposed to have a decent excess! How come I never see any of this?
Really unsure what to do for the best at the mo. I'm swaying (quite quickly) between life's too short, and but we wont be able to overpay, have treats etc. I don't want to make the wrong decision but I don't want to dread going to work and be miserable and tired either.
I'm awful aren't I! Scared I think of putting the family into a bad position.0 -

It is scary, and at times it can be petrifying when the bills all come in at once, but we've managed, and Courgette also seems to be enjoying it.
If the figures are saying yes, don't jump into it, but don't be scared to try it either. I would say for us it was the best thing I have done, and although our mortgage is now a lot lower, it was about £55k when we made the decision. If the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, then happiness is the preferable option in my book. The rest of the stuff still happens.0 -
I keep thinking back to when we applied for the mortgage and we were going through finances with a mortgage advisor. Her words were along the lines of "yes you'll have £200 spare, that's a fortune compared to some couples".
We must have had more than that spare though but I can't remember, as we never seemed to go without. Obv that was before the credit crunch took hold etc, but that does stick in my mind and make me thankful that we are in a better position than a lot of other people with or without my job.
I'm going to request a change of working hours first and see what happens from that. I think I can tell the path it will take but I do know I can't keep on like this forever.0 -
Giving up work is a huge decision so definitely look at all options first & talk it over with your OH. I did it a few years ago & it was very scary at first, but also a massive relief as I hated my job too. We have managed absolutely fine on one salary, a few hairy moments when my DH was faced with the possibility of redundancy (twice!!) but on the whole it's been fine & good for us as a family I think.
My DDs are older now so I'm actually wanting to get back into the world of work & that's quite a scary thought for me, I've been a kept woman for 9 years!! :rotfl:
Good luck with making your decision
