At my hospital, they won't let you in the pool until 5cm, and they have to physically check you (as I suppose you can seem like you are further along but aren't iyswim), not sure if it's the same everywhere though. But however you give birth (except CS) there will be regular internals to check progress, just something they have to do to make sure you are progressing. Best to be prepared for this, but after reading about vaginismus I can see this would be a real problem for some and I really hope it isn't awful for you.

I thought that you can request minimal exams? After all, what they want and what you let them do are 2 entirely different things...

On a seperate note has anyone (who already has children) confirm something for me and my friend.

We were watching one Born every minute last night and couldn't believe the fuss that woman was making over having the cervix check. From our experience it was uncomy YES but it wasn't painful! There seem to have been a few of them who have reallly winged about it as if it is the worst pain in the world.
In fact in our mat hospital checking you is the 1st thing they do before they show you to your room (not in the corrider obviously they have a side room). so you have no gas and air option to use - you have to put up with it.

Mine were agony until I was 3cm, when I was just 1cm my cervix was tilted backwards and they were really really painful. I guess everyone is different :)

    Good luck Sarah!

On the subject of shaving legs from this afternoon... I can no longer do the whole of my legs unless I get into some awkward positions, and as for the bikini line, I've not been able to reach round my bump to get there for some time! Am going to have to ask DH to sort it out for me lol!

My sis asked her DH to help her out in this department prior to the birth of my niece as I recall - wasn't till she looked in the mirror she realised he had shaved an interesting pattern in! - the rotter! :D
I can do my legs by just feeling but for bikini line I will be using a mirror! lol! :rotfl:

I've been told if I have a dry land birth unless there's cause for concern then I don't need to have any internals. And the midwife said at my hospital they are not routine (but do need to be done for the pool so you don't end up going in too early and slowing things down), but she said that most internals she gives are due to the request of the woman in labour. So I've been quite reassured that they won't keep asking me to do them.

But I understand that some hospitals do do them routinely. That's how it appears on OBEM. Whether it's the filming that's making it look like they have them all the time I don't know.

Thanks. I think I'll be OK as long as there is valid reason for doing it! When I had my MMC earlier last year, I had to have several internal scans, and most were OK, but the last one, done by a man incidently, hurt by far the most. Was really painful them twisting that dildo thing around inside me :( I don't have vaginismus, but have a tilted cervix, so that's what makes sex uncomfortable sometimes and smear tests horrible.

MW had to take a bit of scenic route as my cervix is still fairly high and long but got there eventually so sweep, sweep. So weird to think she is the first person to touch my baby. Just got to hope it does the trick.

I have 48 hours left before they want to whip me in for induction. Tick, tick ...

did she say how dilated you were?
"That's no reason to cry. One cries because one is sad. For example, I cry because others are stupid, and that makes me sad."
