Thanks all. It's been 6 weeks since I opened it on a trip to London and decided to try and log-in today. A few clues should jog my memory.......

You chose the security number and password yourself

if you enter an invalid customer ID number on the first page you will still proceed to the second page to enter the security number and password , so you could enter the customer ID number as "1" and still reach the password page

So make sure there is not a blank space after the last digit of the customer ID number (eg if copy & paste is used)

The customer ID number is 12 digits

I think there are two error messages "does not match our records" and "technical difficulties" - so resubmit if the latter

  • Any sign of 'Faster payments'? I'm surprised that this was not incorporated from the start.

They recently purchased 4TRESS for integration with their Temenos system.

My bet is that they're going to use 4TRESS to introduce some 2 factor authentication options and then they'll go live with Faster Payments.

My guess is that they'll probably go with SMS messages to your mobile since the cards they issue aren't capable of CAP

Someone tried to send me some money from france, for some reason, Metro bank rejected it.

I doubt they rejected it, unfortunately their SWIFT instructions miss out one crucial thing:

you need to specify SWIFT intermediary BARCGB22 if you're not sending the payment in GBP as Barclays do their currency conversion.

The cards have chips and they put them into a what looks like a standard Chip reader terminal for you to set your PIN. Never actually tried to use mine for a retail CAP transaction though.

a separate application is used for CAP/DPA, their smartcards don't have it provisioned.

So anyone actually using the debit card in shops is having to sign? How odd.

    no.

    I'm talking about this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chip_Authentication_Program

CAP/DPA has its own AID and is completely separate from the EMV applications (such as M/Chip or VSDC) that gets called to deal with merchant and ATM terminal transactions.

Just an update on Metro Bank. I left a message saying that I had forgotten my Password and Security number which I had set up in the branch and asking for help.
They phoned this morning and of course, before they could help me with re-setting my details, needed to know my security number (or at least 2 digits). Sadly they couldn't see the irony in it so I will have to go into a branch to sort it out.......
