  • I thought Indesit were a good brand? I've had Hotpoint, Hoover, AEG, Zanussi........the list goes on! They all beggar up sooner rather than later. I'm not sure if I've had a Bosch, but tbh I dont hold out much hope for any brand of washer/dryer i get.

Yes, I am going to cancel the insurance and get it independantly when the year's warranty runs out. I didnt realise I had a choice about where to buy insurance from. after all, its not the kind of insurance you see advertised, is it? if they didnt send me letters when an appliance's 1yr warranty was about to run out, i wouldnt even KNOW this type of insurance was available!

Bosch are built better than any of the makes you mention.

As for insurance, try Domestic and General or Warranty Direct and save yourself a packet.

Washing machines are the only appliances I would ever consider this type of insurance for. I certainly wouldn't buy it for my Bosch washing machine as it's simply been too reliable.
  • thanks. i shall look for a Bosch next time. but i honestly dont think it'll last any longer than the ones ive had. like i said, im cursed when it comes to washers n dryers. i have no idea why. i dont abuse them.

anyhoo, thanks for the suggestions of insurers, i shall make a note of them and keep them for next year.

Hotpoint, Zanussi and Indesit are regularly surveyed as 3 of the least reliable brands. I've had a Bosch that has lasted 11 years with quite heavy usage with just one repair in that time (brushes worn out-cost £60 to replace). Bosch tumble drier is the same age-one replacement pump.
Just Google 'Domestic Appliance warranty' if you must buy this insurance.
And Googling 'Currys+warranty' makes for even more interesting reading-have a look at this page...

I had a whatever happens policy with a laptop. Because it broke down so early they pushed me on to the regular manufactureres warranty rather then their extended policy. when it went again it was after 12 months and it went through whatever happens and I got a full refund when they couldn't fix it.

I wonder if that is what they have done to you as well, pushed onto the regular warranty?

Either way, if you are phoning tomorrow to cancel, I guess they have the option of actually doing what they say on the tin or you cancelling!

Anothe reason to go for a Bosch is the warranty-you just need to register it to extend the 12m warranty to 2 years FOC.
John Lewis offer the same free extension on all their large electrical domestic appliances.
So the moral is: don't buy from DSG shops!
Edit: just had a look at the last Which reliability survey and the top brands were: Miele, Bosch and Siemens (in that order). Last were Whirlpool, Hotpoint, Hoover and Servis. Indesit was 9th.

OK, If it was me I would reject the washing machine as being 'unfit' for purpose(that you have lost all faith in the product ,you expect to work without going wrong etc) and ask for a full refund on the washing machine and accordingly the insurance.
I have done this twice with products(although they not covered under additional insurance but both developing faults within a year)a freezer and a dishwasher. Suppliers don't like it but you are within your rights so insist!! A relative also had a problem few weeks back with fridge/freezer(was told 3 weeks for spare!!!) I told her to reject it-couple of days later she had a new one in place :)

Unfortunately you have no legal right to a refund-the retailer is required to offer a repair or a replacement within the warranty period. Some may voluntarily go further than that, but they're not obliged to.

  • OMG I had no idea macman! that link is horrendous!! I feel so stupid. I read it out to hubby (who sat in the car when I bought it instead of coming in with me) and he said he will accompany me in future, because he is not too nice to say NO. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

I wish I did have space for 2 washers, that would be ideal!

I have phoned up the whatever happens team to cancel the insurance. The woman on the phone said she thought if it went wrong within 28 days, I could get a replacement. She phoned someone (currys, indesit, i dunno) to check and said that the "senior engineer" who is coming out monday has to confirm a fault with it, THEN I can get it replaced. But do I get it replaced, or do I return it and buy a more reliable brand? After all, we will have to take it back to currys ourselves, as thats how we bought it.

    I bought this one;
    http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/indesit-iwe8123-washing-machine-white-06171567-pdt.html
for £279.99. the cheapest Bosch there is £350  defo cant afford that :( (tho i realise they may be cheaper elsewhere)

So anyway, I cancelled the whatever happens policy & cancelled the direct debit with my bank, so they cant take any money. i paid £10 towards it when i bought my washer & that'll take 10-14 days to be refunded

thanks again for all the replies. i best pop off and make 2 new threads, cos when hubby gets paid at the end of the month, we have 2 more electrical purchases we want to make before the VAT goes up :)

by law the retailer has to repair it or

Do shops have to give me my money back?
    June 30th, 2008

When you buy something from a shop you are entering into a legally binding contract. Therefore they don’t have to give you a refund simply because you have changed your mind. Only if one of your statutory rights is breached (i.e. that the item is damaged, of poor quality or not fit for purpose) do they have to give you your money back.

Shops will often tell you they will only give a refund on production of proof of purchase. Don’t be mislead into thinking this must be a till receipt. It can be a bank or credit card statement, although you may run into difficulties if it is for a different amount than that of the item you are trying to return.
