Are loans being abolished then? I always thought everyone was entitled to go to university and not have to pay the fees upfront but instead can take out a student loan.

So please explain, how will people not be able to afford to go?

A lot of students are campaigning because the "worse off", can't afford to. When infact, this has much truth as aliens existing.

    - LOANS WILL STILL EXIST.
    - GRANTS WILL GO TO THOSE WORSE OFF.
    - ANYONE WHO HAS THE INTELLIGENCE TO WORK THIS OUT WILL STILL GO TO UNIVERSITY EVEN IF THEY COME FROM A LOWER INCOME BACKGROUND.

The protest was a load of crap, and I hope NUS get fined heavily.

Could not agree more, it's a massive fuss over nothing. All that is happening is that for the majority of students the amount they will owe but never pay back is going to increase. The people who will actually pay it back are the ones earning more and by that stage where on earth does the too poor to go to uni argument go? If you're earning £50k+ per annum it matters not a jot that you came from a poor family when you went to uni.

If they were asking for it up front or if students loans worked like real bank loans then I may understand the fuss but as it stands it's a lot of hot air from people who haven't looked past page one to see how little this will actually affect students.

You certainly sound very rude. Dont drag an indivuial people into it.You may be intelligent but you dont have maners!

just because you can do a greek degree dosnt make you "smart" there are diffrent types of smart, emotional intelligece-which you dont have.

I dont like people who think they are so smart for doing a degree...How is ancient greek releviant to the current ecomic climate.. i mean i dont think an office is going to say"yes, of course well employ you".

I find it ironic that somebody with your level of literacy is commenting about education matters.

This self-aggrandisement by degree holders who have simply gone to Uni gets them nowhere. If you want to stand out go to Uni, get a degree, and do something worthwhile whilst you're there, or I simply won't consider you are worthy.

What about me though, I have a mickey mouse degree from a 'poly' and am now a teacher. Am I worthy in your eyes?

To be fair, rgay1992's literacy is better than that of many graduates!

I'd be more inclined to agree with the OP if political parties paid for the policing costs of their own annual conferences. They cost the country far more than the occasional demonstration. Perhaps we'd have better Government if we were more like the French and refused to accept bad decisions.
  • It amuses me how so many people think it was actual students doing the rioting.

Far more likely to have been a mix of anarchist !!!!!! that thrive on escalating peaceful protests (whatever the cause), and police infiltrators starting aggro so the police look 'good' this time after all the bad press from G20 and Ian Tomlinson.

Had you watched Newsnight on the day of the protests, you would see a student admitting to partaking in the rioting. Further, the person that has been arrested (and I believe is now bailed) for throwing a fire extinguisher off the roof is a student.

The evidence does not seem to back up your viewpoint?

  • The riots were absolutely ridiculous and they have ruined any chance now of the government listened to their cause.
    I had sympathy for them, now I couldn't give a rats a**.
They wont be paying the huge fees anyway - so why do they think it gives them the right to trash buildings?
It's people like me who could face paying £9k a year when I (fingers crossed) go into university in 2 years time.

I hope every person involved in those riots are kicked out of university for good. The idiots.

I agree, and if they get prosecuted it will ensure few graduate employers will ever consider employing them.

  • wow! I am so surprised at some of these replies and how bad peoples attitudes are towards students!

I went to Uni and worked hard, holding down a part job while studying, and now I'm paying back my student loan while working full time. Not all students are beer guzzling, non-tax paying lazy layabouts.

yes the group of protesters that resorted to violence was wrong and those individuals caught should indeed be punished, but tarring the remaining 50,000 peaceful protesters with the same brush is down right narrow minded and stupid.

Fine the universities by taking it out of their budgets? totally ludicrous. How would you feel if it was your son/daughter/grandchild's university that had a reduced budget, meaning less resources etc? not very happy i'll bet!

Also what does it matter if you have a degree in criminal law or disney films? while I do not agree with some of the degrees available today, I would not berate that person for choosing something that they want to do, and I certainly would not think that they are a lesser person then me.
