So if fees go up to America levels ($10-20,000) then you'll be OK with that because a degree is supposed to be about independent learning. How convenient that you have graduated before these fees will have come into force. Would you still pay £9000 a year for your degree now? A lot of people on low and modest incomes would not as they would be put off the cost.

I absolutely would, given that I had to start paying my student loans back when I earnt more than £16,000 p/a, which given I started on £18,000 meant straight away, under the new proposals they don't have to until they earn £21,000 p/a. And surely £9,000 in exceptional circumstances since the normal cap is £6,000) is better than unlimited fees, which is what was recommended. A few years paying off the loan is easily outweighed by the earning potential I have in the next 30 years. Incidently I'm currently paying for my MSc myself without any loans etc.

For info my parents didn't earn a great deal however both my sister and I didn't get grants so had to work part time and during the holidays to give us some money to pay for things like books, and that was on top of our studies.

    Hmm. Now let's see.

    Tutition fees unpopular. Government unpopular.

Left wing extremist groups will attend demonstration and cause trouble. Police have infiltrated these groups to the hilt and know that there will be trouble.

Riot takes place but police mysteriously do little or nothing. Riot heavily publicised, plenty of pictures of screaming longhairs smashing property.

Students now look very bad, lose public sympathy. Government popular again.

    Success!

Don't you just love the way that students think that they have an automatic right to put their fingers in your pocket?

Every economically developed country needs to have a higher education system with a large number of graduates to prosper.

And how many have to pay for it them self, America as an example where the fees are much higher.

Well if ignorant people like you get their way, there's not much point of having a national education system. Everyone who pays tax will always have to subsidise somebody else. Only in a Banana Republic could people be expected to pay exactly to the penny for what public services they have used. Also, you are ignoring the huge economic benefits of having a large % of the population going to University. Go and live somewhere in the third world where people share your mentality (ie. Chad). Students don't put their fingers in your pocket but it is a much less economically developed place than everywhere else where, according to you they do (here.)

That's an exception as it's one of the most unequal places on the planet. Whilst America is a very rich country, the wealth is unequally shared by a few people at the top, whilst millions of people are in dead end low-paid jobs and unable to pay their medical bills as they couldn't afford/were put off by the University fees. That's not a great place to live, unless you are in the minority at the top. But measures like this will put this country in the same boat.

I have decided to do a degree in Goat Yodelling (or it may be Underwater Basket Weaving, I'm not too sure yet). Kindly send a cheque for £10,000.

    No? Oh.

It was very funny wasn't it, I really do hope the NUS and her university take action against her though.

Cringeworthy, especially when she mentioned her son was with her - an embarrassment to other students and a bad mother!

Perhaps some people are not suited to university?
This is the simple truth, and like most truths, it sticks in some peoples throats.

You can take it the other way too - depending on what they want to do, university may actually have nothing to offer them!

Can you please explain the economic benefit of having 50% of the population with degrees? There are so many second rate degrees from good and poor Universities. What good do certain degrees do in the number that are been churned out.
