Student Protest/Riots

You do have a choice as to whether to attend university or not.
So basically you are saying to people that deserve to go to University, but are unable to pay the associated fees (or get someone else to), that it's ok that they are being denied the chance to go to University because it's a choice to go. In America, the sick are thrown out of hospitals as they can't pay the extortionate medical insurance fees, I guess you are ok with that too because people have a choice of whether to go to hospital or not. Nice values!0 -

Healthcare is essential for life. Is a degree, especially one that you seem to think is worthless?Gone ... or have I?0 -
Well if you have to teach yourself, then why should you have to pay £6000 to a University?
Week one day one and my dean of school stood up and said that we were expected to x (can't remeber the exact number now but was more than lectures) number of hours outside lectures, lab work and seminars, that we were there to read a subject and not to be taught it. To be honest (and I think all my lecturers had PhDs) I wouldn't have passed if I hadn't done the reading.
Trouble today is people want everything spoon fed to them.0 -

Well I guess everyone has the choice to die. Like I said before, everyone benefits from higher education, not just the people themselves who graduate. Before someone mentions degree courses like flamingo or hairdressing studies at some obscure University, have some common sense and realise that people doing these degrees are in the extreme minority.0 -
I agree with last sentence , but why hurt law abiding students , quite a few students attend for low grade degrees in order to avoid paying council tax and working for a living ,that is why so many cannot find jobs when they enter the real world.
as for the outrage over 'fees' it is time students looked at other countries fees and compare how little is paid here.
it is sad that this country has downgraded from politicians to students ect., as a load of wingers who think the country owes them a free lifestyle.0 -

So if fees go up to America levels ($10-20,000) then you'll be OK with that because a degree is supposed to be about independent learning. How convenient that you have graduated before these fees will have come into force. Would you still pay £9000 a year for your degree now? A lot of people on low and modest incomes would not as they would be put off the cost.0 -

Are loans being abolished then? I always thought everyone was entitled to go to university and not have to pay the fees upfront but instead can take out a student loan.
So please explain, how will people not be able to afford to go?
A lot of students are campaigning because the "worse off", can't afford to. When infact, this has much truth as aliens existing.
- LOANS WILL STILL EXIST.
- GRANTS WILL GO TO THOSE WORSE OFF.
- ANYONE WHO HAS THE INTELLIGENCE TO WORK THIS OUT WILL STILL GO TO UNIVERSITY EVEN IF THEY COME FROM A LOWER INCOME BACKGROUND.
The protest was a load of crap, and I hope NUS get fined heavily.0 -
What a ridiculous idea! I haven’t been into a UK hospital for about 5 years, so according to you because I haven’t benefited from a National Health Service during that time then I shouldn’t have to pay for a health service through taxation? It is not possible to pick and choose what you want to pay for. The last time I checked it’s the year 2010 not 1810. Every economically developed country needs to have a higher education system with a large number of graduates to prosper. There’s a reason that places with a low number of graduates and a poor Higher Education system remain undeveloped and lagging behind other nations in terms of wealth. Higher education, in the long term always generates more wealth for everyone in a country, as people who receive it pay back the cost through higher taxes and their education helps the nation as a whole (i.e. doctors in hospitals.)
Why should i pay for them to get drunk and as it seems, poor teaching. The people who will get better jobs from this should pay it back. I dont think may people relised that the goverment actually rose the repayment mark to over 21,000 instead of 15,000.. better for students.
Im going to be paying for some kid to maybe get a nice 40,000 job and in the mean time ive not got anything back from that, in the nhs(dont get me started on them) i should get something back, directly.
All i will get back from a 40,000 graduate is having to pay them for their services...i loose twice.
Nursing, teaching, and other "helping "proffessions should be FREE , those people are messed over as they then go into cheap paying jobs anyway.
You take money from the 40,000 and give it to joe bloogs for benefits...then joe bloggs uses his money to consult the 40,000 grad,
all your doing is taking from one to the other no one really benefits(not great example)
And with the nhs there are people who dont use the system...and when they do cant get cerain drugs due to the area they live! How dose that benefit?0
