18 months is not a reasonable lifespan for a console. You need to quote ' The sale of goods act 1979' which states that the goods must be of SATISFACTORY QUALITY and the GOODS SHOULD ALSO BE DURABLE, this means that they should last the length of time that a reasonable person would expect goods of that kind to last.

18 months is not reasonable, contact the trader first in order to establish what they can offer. I contacted the manufacturer but usually it is advisable to contact the trader first.

I just called microsoft support who are saying that because it's out of warranty it'll cost £83 to fix even though I argued that a year and a half isn't a reaosnable amount of time when you pay so much for a flippin console. Then the woman just said ok bye and put the phone down!!! GRRRR
Hope Ste has better luck with HMV!

Sorry to hear about the xbox. I know how important they can be for sanity (have 17 year old son). Its also SO annoying when youre jogging along nicely paying for everything, scrimping and scraping and then you get whacked with an enormous unexpected bill. Its awful, one step forward and two steps back. So I really sympathise.

They are just trying to play you, you need to write to them and quote the sale of goods act. You can also mention that you got this advice from CAB, that's not strictly a lie since I do advice there :p .
Warranty is just for extra protection, The Sale of Goods Act 1979 gives you statutory rights which individual manufacturers cannot override.

It would be better for your pocket if you paid the £83 repair, than if you got the £100 and then bought a new one. Although of course the new one might last longer.

When my son failed his GCSEs my husband got a sledgehamer and smashed his xbox to bits. However, he managed to get himself a new one last summer. Brand new. After doing a bit of work for his dad, he paid for it himself and now hes going to fail his AS levels as well. Just thought Id let you know that piece of useless information.
