I recently left feedback on the Mobileshop website. I said that Mobileshop were a safe option for cash back claims but also mentioned that you can wait up to 85 days for your cash back to be paid. I also mentioned that the payment period has been extended to 60 after the expiry of the redemption voucher. The original payment period was 45 days on my original order.

Guess what?? They haven't added my feedback, I wonder why...

    Another worrying trend.

They write to you now after you send in a claim (eg for £105) and offer to substitute the cheque for a gift (portable DVD player).

The attraction of the offer is they will send the dvd player "today" - otherwise settle back for a long(er - than originally promised) wait for your money.

Presumably they've taken up del boy on some hookie dvd players (worth nowhere near £105) and hit on this idea to flog em off expensively.
  • what - portable DVD player instead of £105....!!! It better be a Sony or Panasonic with recordable features at least!

No - it is a mystery make:
We have a high quality Portable DVD player with a 8" LCD screen that you can have despatched to your home address today. This could be the perfect Christmas present for one of your loved ones.

I hear you ask...... "How do I take up this fantastic offer?"

up this offer and we will do the rest. We will exchange your cash back
voucher for the Portable DVD player and despatch the Portable DVD player

    I have got a new phone on a £90 x 4 cashback scenario = £360 in total

They phoned me up a week or so ago ...

They offered me a special Christmas Deal.

I could have all my cashback upfront by Christmas if I agreed, and would not need to spend the next year sending vouchers in and waiting for my money.

I said sure, whats the catch

No catch, she replied, just say the word and I'll get a cheque for £180 raised for you which you will receive by Christmas.

Ahh, I said, so this is only the first two parts of the cashback

No she said, and without a trace of embarassment added that, the reason it is slightly lower than the full cashback is because you get it upfront and you don't have the hassle of sending in vouchers and copies of bills!

For some strange reason I declined ....

Mind you, if they go under then perhaps I will regret that :(

They did the same last December as well - However, it's worth noting that the amount on offer this year is lower. Last year I believe they were offering something in the region of £220 - £240 for an upfront payment instead of £360 for manual claim.

For what it's worth, the offer isn't all that bad when you compare it to other upfront cashback deals on the market currently, which average at around 1/3 of the manual claim equivalent - however, that may be as much to do with lack of competition in this area than anything else (such as the assumed manual claim failure rates built into their business models).

I believe that when more retailers jump on board the automatic cashback bandwagon, as is quite likely to happen over the next 6 months or so, the competition in this area will probably result in an increase in the average automatic cashback payment to something closer to the 50% mark.

    Just my two penn'orth...
