"I want to make a hamper for my nan shes 80
the problem is shes diabectic(no sweets, chocs"
What about buying diabetic chocs? They sell them in Boots.
Sorry if someone said that 11 pages back but I haven't read it all.0 -
Hi
This is my first post, it's good to see so many people doing the same hamper thing as me! I did my first last year, and am determined to be more organised this year. Every household is getting a hamper, so the list is currently 11 - eek! Last year trying to cool 'christmas flapjacks' to pack them at midnight was not fun! The syrup means they take FOREVER to cool! Although the baking will still have to be done the day before the delivery trawl, they will be done before midnight!
Does anyone know where sells shot glasses cheaply?0 -
Not sure if this will be useful for anyone but I went to Wilkinsons this afternoon and found these boxes.
They also have blue and green and are 49p each.
I think they also had slightly larger for 79p.Debt free date - June 2008 :T :T :T0 -
Was in Boots today and was shocked at the price of their gift hampers. They were selling a large mug, with a small pack of marshmallows and a mini-grate for £10.00    I am looking at doing a hot chocolate type hamper and it will have cost me half the price, and contain a lot more stuff! It totally puts it into perspective! Plus, anyway homemade hampers are so much more personal and good fun to compile!
A few suggestions for hamper containers, scour the charity shops: I got a good sized chrome basket from the charity shop today for 99p. Will come in handy for one of my deluxe hampers!
Also, picked up the Aldi leaflet today (offers from 9th Nov) and they have some lovely Xmas chocolates. They have a box called 'Gran Party' which is 24 individually foil wrapped Pralines, for £2.99. Ideal for splitting into several hampers; you could even pop a few into an organza bag for a hint of luxury! There's a few nice chocs, including truffles, nougat and Belgian chocs, all around the £2-£3 mark for a decent sized box worth!0 -
Wow what a great thread i have read all 11 pages with great interest as we came up with this idea three years ago.
As an active pta member we asked for donations from parents of luxury food to put into hampers at sell at the school fair, last year we refined it a bit and just asked for the foods we knew sold well and this year we are buying all our own stuff and having a non uniform day to raise funds for this. We had too much supermarket own brands and obscure items that didn't go together.
The things that worked were:
Christmas glasses filled with wrapped sweets (for hygiene reasons)
Mugs filled with hot chocolate sachets, a flake and a Twix and some wrapped chocolates
Chinese hamper - jar cooking sauce, chop sticks, small 19p bowls from Ikea prawn crackers this year found large balti dishes in £1 shop to use instead of baskets
Cheese and wine - cheese knife (£1 shop) mini wine small quality crackers and nice chutney (no cheese as would not keep)
Chocolate - lots of mini boxes (3 for 2 in superdrug) and wrapped chocs to fill in the gaps
Soup - Ikea bowls spoons and good quality soup
The first year we raised £140, last year £295 so hopefully better this year but for a 35 pupil school we were really pleased.
We have struggled with shredded paper, crepe paper clogged the shredder, last year we just used full pieces crumpled, was wondering if pet shops still do shredded paper for hamsters and if its economical to use or are there any other ideas?Owner of a cute cottage in the North York Moors :j0 -

I have used Christmas tinsel, the shredded stuff, in my hampers - comes in a variety of colours and looks great, and not too expensive.

Aldi have gift boxes on sale this thursday 3 for 1.99. I can see from the emailed newsletter how big they are but they do have some nice christmassy themes, that may be suitable for children - eg snowman etc and some grownup ones too. maybe worth checking out their website for details.
