Hi - I am very annoyed!! HMRC have been taking too much tax off me for 10 years

Why have you been overpaying and why has it taken you so long to discover it?

It means there is a tax free allowance of £10780 for the year. Any income above that amount is taxable.
  • Is it a normal tax code?
  • If my gross is 41000 what rough amount should I pay towards tax per month?

The normal tax allowance for this year is £11000.00 so something has reduced your allowance if this is for 2016/17. If you have a coding notice this will explain why otherwise only HMRC can advise.

Assuming tax code of 1078L and payments are spread evenly through year then about £504 a month tax. Plus NI and anything else that may apply of course.

  • Hi,
I've just been through this process and found that I've been overpaying tax since joining my current employer back in 2010. After ringing the PAYE helpline, they're now processing my overpaid tax back to 2012/13, but they said they couldn't go back further than that. On the MSE website, it suggests I should fight my corner to get this older tax back and I'm guessing this involves writing direct to them, but have others had success with this? The lady I spoke to on the phone at the tax office suggested it wasn't possible.

    THanks
  • You're more likely to get some useful responses if you could expand a little on why you have paid too much tax and what sort of amounts you're talking about for the older years
