Tax rebate SUCCESSES

Looked at both my P60 for last year and my tax code for this year - both out of whack.
I phoned HMRC - turned out they assumed the extra day's work for someone else meant I was earning over £5k (a standard assumption by all accounts).
The very helpful team member ran the numbers for me - I just got a very nice big cheque and they've changed my tax code for this year too, so my latest pay slip has had less tax taken out.
She also said phoning early, late or on Saturday morning means avoiding the long phone waits in future.
Well worth doing!0 -
Just looked at DH's wage slip and his tax code is BR. Looks like this has been the case for four years  he's going to ring them Monday morning.
Do you think we may get a rebate?House renovation savings £25,000/£25,000
Emergency fund £1000

Without any detail it's impossible to say. Maybe he has BIK which cancel out the personal allowance? The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0 -
Hi all,
Hubby has just come home from work today and payroll have told him that his tax code last month was wrong (this was his first pay check with them - new job) and this month, the code according to his previous employer would be applied - which was BR. Having looked into this, I think this has been the wrong code. He's only got this job, no pensions/health insurance/company car etc, is 44yrs old. He earns 16K pa. last month his new employer put him on 1000L but is now saying that they will have to claim that back. They've been great and they've said they think he should be on the 1000L and will help him sort it out.... so he's going to call HMRC tomorrow - fingers crossed they will sort it - and toes crossed that BR vs 1000L means he might have been overpaying on the 13866 he earn last tax year....
What does anyone think?
I know little about this - I'm lucky that my tax code is all sorted and I know it's right. i'd appreciate any thoughts....0 -

If he's been on a BR tax code all of last tax year and this has been his only income, then yes he should be in line for a big tax rebate.0 -
Just thought I would let you after my stepdaughter saw my tax code she informed me that it was wrong so usin your tax calculator it appeared that I was paying to much tax for the last 4 years anyway to cut along long story short, after contacting HMRC I received a total refund for £2,300 which was very nice as my daughter was getting married and it helped. So a BIG THANKYOU0

So an update... he phoned the tax office. they agreed that it is the wrong code and have now changed his code to 1000L (won't help this months pay - but from now it it'll be right!)
Re the BR code all last year, - turns out then when he was out of work, he did 3 weeks of agency work then left. BUT they didn't close him off their books before he started his permanent job in Jan 2014... hence the BR rate as HMRC thought it was his 2nd job. SO, they are investigating and will send him through monies owing - but they implied that as it was near the end of the tax year it might take a while... I hope not. Basically, they have to verify that he actually was only earning on one job.Once they do that (and that's what they will actually find!) - then we should get the money - we've worked out that it'll be around £40 per week he is owed! We THINK!
thanks to this group - I found out a whole lot more before he called them -0 -

If it's used next month he should then get his overpaid tax back.SO, they are investigating and will send him through monies owing - but they implied that as it was near the end of the tax year it might take a while... I hope not.
It shouldn't take that long but possibly up to 6 weeks.Basically, they have to verify that he actually was only earning on one job.Once they do that (and that's what they will actually find!) - then we should get the money - we've worked out that it'll be around £40 per week he is owed! We THINK!

Last year's tax-free allowance was £9440 which should have been at 0%. He will have been taxed 20% on that which is £1888 of tax he shouldn't have paid provided he earned more than £9440 last year.0 -

Yes, his p60 says he earned £13866 until he left on 31st Dec... and he was also on a different code from Jan-March of 2014 - which I think is the emergency tax code - before they moved him to BR - so I hope this has a happy ending - and I guess the money back next month will make March pay nice and healthy - which is handy for him - as my birthday is at the end of March ;-)0 -

if you have the figures of his total income and total tax paid from his P45 and P60 then I'm sure someone could tell you how much of a refund is due.0
