Each year just said I may have been overpaying a certain amount so over the 4 years I gave, it totalled that. I dont really know much about tax so I thought I would check....
I just used the figure you gave for tax year 2010/11 and it told me it was correct. You did change the tax year to the correct one I assume?0 -
Yes I changed it to what each year said...I think one was fine but the others werent...Im sure Im not going mad.
Its top of my to do list! Approx 8 years Ive wasted0 -
No I didnt....
I knowits depressing!!
Well it all appears to be very different today-when checking again its either ok or 5quid different-definately did the same thing as yesterday-strange!!0 -

Very strange!
I don't even agree with their £5 estimate as your tax codes are spot on so it's being a bit daft with the allowance by suggesting there's a £5 difference in allowances which would result in a whole £1 tax.0 -
A quick thanks to Martin and the MSE team, if they're reading this. Their feature in the weekly email of 25 June prompted me to check my payslips. It turns out that I've been on the wrong code at my employer ever since I started working for them - almost two years ago. I've basically been denied by tax free allowance the whole time. On Monday I received a reimbursement from HMRC in excess of £3000.
I have to hand it to the HMRC as well. Bypassing the 0300 number and dialling 01355 359022 I got through to an agent immediately, and she talked me through the whole process, checking my P60s and pay slips. I was genuinely impressed with the efficiency and promptness of the whole process.
Thanks again Martin and MSE :beer:0 -

The emergency tax code wouldn't be used for two jobs. BR or D0 are the normal tax codes for that situation. When she was taken on full time in the internship however, they kept her on the emergency tax code and said they we're too busy to sort things out.
Why didn't she phone HMRC?She left there in November when the internship ended and has been back at Macdonalds around 30 hrs a week since, looking for a better job. She is still on the emergency tax code.
The emergency tax code for this tax year is 1000L on a non-cumulative basis. Can you confirm what tax code your daughter is actually on?She enquired before Christmas about getting a tax refund and was told it would happen automatically but nothing has.
It would only happen automatically if she was on the wrong tax code and then she was placed on the correct tax code.Should she 'phone the tax office or do they know she is on the wrong tax code? I feel sorry for her because she earns little enough without paying such a high tax amount and could really do with the refund right now.
Thanks in advance.
If you daughter is on anything other than 1000L (with no Mth1/Wk1 suffix) and this is her only job, then she should phone HMRC asap and explain the situation. They will then issue her employers the correct tax code.0 -
She did phone HRMC. They sent information to her employer, but the wages were done by the bosses wife who was always 'too busy' to sort problems like this out. She has gone to bed now in a huff lol so I can't get the rest of the information, but many thanks for what you have provided thus far. I will get her to sort something out tomorrow - the other problem she has is that her pay slips at the internship were only online, as was her P60. As she has left there she no longer has the access code to this information (sigh- this is why she is in a huff, I advised her to get all this information downloaded and printed off in November!) of course she will need all of this when she phones up and it's going to take her more time now she has to contact this 'very busy' lady !0

Howdy,
Just wandered into this thread and saw your post. I've been on 1000L since April 2014 and 944L W since I started my job last June (2013). Ilare you saying this is an emergency code?
If it's useful, my P60 for 2013-2014 states:
Pay: / Tax deducted:
In Previous employment: £0 / £0
In this employment: £10,103.16 / £1,219
10 grand seems wrong as the total.. I started on 18k and rose to 22k in February 20140 -

They are the emergency codes for their respective tax years. However they are also the standard tax codes for each tax year. The only difference is how they are being used. If they have a Wk1/Mth1 suffix and are being used non-cumulatively they are emergency tax codes. If no suffix and are being used cumulatively then they are normal tax codes.
It sounds possible that your 944L W - did you miss a bit after the W? - was an emergency tax code.If it's useful, my P60 for 2013-2014 states:

Looks like the emergency tax code was used here as you have paid more tax than would be expected for that income.
What happened before this new job? Were you working elsewhere or were you on JSA or neither?10 grand seems wrong as the total.. I started on 18k and rose to 22k in February 2014
It won't be for a whole year if you only started in June. Do you pay into a pension and is it taken from gross salary before you are taxed? If so this would reduce the amount on the P60.0
