So which code do i use and how do I work out the tax i should have paid?

Use the one on your P60 for 06-07 ....... which should be 508L. Put the details into this checker :

    http://www.listentotaxman.com/

..... select 06-07 from the drop down and input the Code - as it's non standard and will default to £5035 allowances otherwise. Then check off the tax it reports to that on the P60?

Thankyou for that. thats a great help. i can see that should have paid 360.72 tax but i have calculated i actually paid £510.25. but i did receive a rebate from the first job of that year when i left for 94.10.

i am also confused as started the tax year 2006 with a ni code of D but then a few months later it got changed to A.

i also was paying into a pension sheme ( was with the nhs) but then i decided to stop it as i needed the cash so does that have any affect on my code? whether it be a positive or negaticve one.

NI code D is the NI rate for someone in a pension scheme that is contracted out of the state second pension scheme. From what you are saying it looks like the NHS pension scheme you were in was a contracted out scheme so you paid a lower rate of NI the D rate which changed to the higher A rate when you left it. The contributions to the pension would proberbly have been taken before tax was worked out so you would have had two gross figures on your payslip a gross figure for what you were paid and a taxable gross for what tax was worked out on.

oh thankyou for making that clear for me.

i have just looked at my last payslip for that particular job and it says pensionable pay year to date is £5001.71

The taxable pay year to date is £4875.09, it says the tax i paid year to date is 389.10 and my pension contributions were 182.67.

so was my tax for the year 2006-2007 wrong? i have added up all the tax i paid for the 3 jobs and it equals 510.25 but the calculator mikeyorks sent me a link to says the tax paid should have been 360.72 using my final tax code for that year which was 508L.

also does anyone have any idea how you could find out what your last pay was from a job? the year 2005-2006 i had 2 jobs. i can see the p60 for the last one which says i paid out 159.72 in tax and my tax code was 489L ml? however i have no info on the previous job, i kept none of the payslips p60,p45etc. (not very wise i know). is there anyway i could find out what i actually paid in tax at that employment and also what does Ml mean at the end of my tax code?

thankyou so much to everyone who is helping me with this, it really means a lot

If you passed P45s between your employers - then your P60 should have the correct aggregated tax on it? There should be a 'previous employment' figure.

In which case you can do no more than add them up from the P60 + 2 x P45s? If that then shows an overpayment you can claim it.

You can ask the employer for a statement of pay / tax. But - you're out of time for that as you can't claim for 05-06 after 31st January (5 days away). So get a claim in for 06-07 (deadline 31st March) and ask they review 05-06 at the same time. I would do that in writing (1st class) as that way the claim is in before 31st Jan. No harm ringing as well ..... but get the letter in to establish the claim before the date expires.
M1 means 'Month 1' ..... means you were taxed on a non cumulative basis. So quite possibly overpaid if there was a gap between jobs.
