No you must write or phone HMRC. They don't deal in email.

The tax code checker states the following:
    • For example, if you are aged between 65 and 74 you can earn up to £9,940 in the 2011/12 tax year without coughing up to HMRC. And if you are still grafting aged 75 and beyond, you can earn the first £10,090 tax-free. However, in both cases, this is on the condition that your annual income from all sources doesn't exceed £24,000.

Above this level of earnings, your personal allowance tapers away, decreasing by £1 for every £2 you earn.
What it fails to explain is that the personal allowance tapers away until it equals the basic personal allowance (unlike those on £100K+ salaries whose personal allowance tapers away to zero).

I took the test yesterday and was advised that I was possibly overpaying for my tax. I called the tax office and was shocked to find out that I have been paying £25 a month extra tax because they had not taken enough tax in 2006. I had never been informed about this and yesterday was the first I heard about it.

On the plus side, it is almost paid off, so I will be better off by £25 a month in the future!

Not enough detail. Is this 11-12? And what other taxable income do you have?

If you have (and you should have) a P2 (Coding Notice) showing 553L ...... give some detail from that.
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !
  • Hi because I have registered and been paid around 3 weeks money by 4 different agencies and receiving £185 per month pension I have had my allowance divided between them.
Even though most of the year I have only worked for one and had 3 months without work at all.
Next years code arrived which is 205T will they notice this year I only earned £11000 max and adjust or will I have to jump thru lots of hoops!!!

I would suggest that once you get to the end of the tax year, you add up all the figures and see if you have overpaid/underpaid.

With split allowances it's almost impossible to adjust automatically.
  • Wondered if anyone could help with my daughters mixed up codes, she started a job on 27/04/08 as a temporary staff member then on the 27/07/08 she was made permanent, instead of informing the HR department of this change the office manager ran her as a leaver on 26/07/08 and reinstated her 27/07/08 as a permanent member of staff. Her tax code when she started was 543L then when she was reinstated on 27/07/08 it changed to 603L. At the beginning of the year she received a letter from the tax office saying she hadn't paid enough tax, when she rang them they are saying she has 2 jobs, both with her employer with the same PAYE Reference number, on the letter it clearly states the start and end dates i have put above. The tax office don't seem able to grasp this confusion and are still sending her letters, any suggestions would be greatly received.

then when she was reinstated on 27/07/08 it changed to 603L.

I doubt that was the case. The basic allowance for everyone changed to 603 from the Autumn of that year. Your daughter's code changes have nothing to do with her status change. But everything to do with Gordon Brown abolishing the 10% tax rate, making a mess of it and adding £600 to allowances from mid-year.

I would suggest the underpayment is little to do with the dates and more to do with the pay details her employer sent to HMRC at the year end. Sounds very much as though they've sent pay data for the temporary period and then included that again with the final figures for the year end.

If you post the figures from the P800 (underpayment letter) and her P60 (pay / tax / Code) ....... someone might make sense of it for you. For the P60 ....... show any 'previous employment' figures as well as the total?
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !
