DFW'ers photographic challenge - use those £££ cameras!

This thread has been born from a conversation over on Pippilongstocking's thread where several of us were talking about the shameful neglect our cameras are facing. For many of us the purchase of said cameras have added to debt, in the long or short term, so then letting them gather dust seems crazy!
So, what's the idea of this then? Well, basically, via a series of challenges or themes, to get us out there using the cameras, thinking about what we're looking at, and starting to think like photographers, with the aim of having some fun, getting to see what others are inspired by, and hopefully producing some pics we're really pleased with.
Some quick guidelines:
Before posting the pics onto the thread via the image button above (the one that looks like a postcard of some mountains!) you'll ned to host them online somewhere - I would suggest Photobucket as a good option.
Pics posted onto the thread need to be resized to a maximum of 10" on the longest edge. (I *think* that's 800 pixels for those of you that prefer to work in that language!)
If taking photos around your home PLEASE be careful to exclude anything that would give away your exact location!
Remember - everything you post on these forums is copyright MSE/Martin. If you take something that you think might potentially make your fortune, think twice before posting it up on here.
The photo(s) you submit for each theme should have been taken during the period of time that theme has been running.....picking something off your hard drive that's been there for a few years would defeat the object slightly!
Right - a couple of quick "holding posts" to come, then I'll post up the first challenge and we can all get thinking. Is everyone happy if we say a week for each theme, then a few days to discuss before the next one goes up?

There's something like this in the Guardian Weekend mag every Saturday which I keep meaning to do but never remember after reading the magazine then putting it down!
Memory like the proverbial sieve!

goodluck everyone
Well done EH on getting this up so quick! I'm really off to bed now!Total debt 26/4/18 <£1925 we were getting there.
Total debt as of 28/4/19 £7867.38:eek:

:money:Sleeves up folks.:money:0 -
OK then - here we go.....any more takers please just post to say you're taking part and I'll add you to the list at the top.
So, for the first theme, how about:
"Onset of winter?"
Note the question mark to encourage lateral thinking! I suspect that most people will, after thinking about it for a while, have their "safe subject" thought, so if you usually like taking pictures of the landscape around you, or of people, or something quirky, that will be where your first thought takes you. Take that shot, and make it one you're happy with. Then take a step outside that comfort zone and try something different, for me this might be something like candid "fly on the wall" shots of people as this is something I usually struggle with, for someone else it might be the slow, controlled and patient Macro-type shots. You get the idea?
Shall we say a rough deadline of the end of next Monday for this one? That gives us a weekend to play with and hopefully a decent mix of weather for most of us. (not for Pippi obviously, she'll just have howling gales as usual!)

thanks for this EH. Good theme, instantly thought of the photo i have of OH getting ready for bed with thermals and a wooly hat on but as i've already scrapbooked this i shall not share/inflict it on others lol
Glad we've got the weekend included as that's when i'm likely to be able to take photo's. must remember to post before i go to the outlaws though.
Was going to be thick and say i can't find the mountain postcard picture to inserting a photo but i have sorted it out now.0 -
Thanks EH.
I have just found your home page and it is beautiful. So inspiring.
Now I am quite nervous and excited about this. I have had several good cameras and never got round to really learning about how to use them. Macros are quite alien to me. Perhaps this is a challenge I should set myself. It will probably be the weekend before I get out to take photos. Some days there aren't any trumpets, just lots of dragons. Awww - thanks for your comments Cherisong - really glad to know you like the pics on my blog too - I must get around to posting on there more often. I post daily when we are in the Hebrides, but am far slacker about it the rest of the time.
The weather has been glorious down here today - it was forecast to be so and I had planned to put my camera in the boot of the car so I could have a play around with some shots during my lunchtime. Naturally I forgot, and then saw several things that I thought fitted the idea I had in my mind! In the interests of geting at least something for the challenge, I've taken a few pics on the iPhone camera - I have to admit to being pleasantly impressed with the quality of it compared to the majority of mobile phone cameras I've used. Haven't transferred them onto the computer yet though. I got into the habit for a while of always carrying my compact camera with me, but have slipped back on that again recently. Something else to get back to I think.
Re my Blog - I'll commit to posting something on Sunday as we're going to the Imperial War museum at Duxford for the day - if I can't find something there worth posting up I should be forced - at gunpoint - to sell all my camera gear immediately as no longer being worthy of owning it!🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡

The key with macro stuff is very steady hands, or better still a tripod. This is less vital with a standard lens with "macro capability" than with what is classed as a "true" macro lens, but still very helpful. It's something I play with from time to time but I have to be really in the right mindset for it as it requires more patience than I naturally possess! :rotfl: Come to think of it, maybe one of the future challenges should be "Close Up and Personal"?🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡
