I assume the intention is that no one will profit from this arrangement. Therefore, if the single person is geting out of this half of what the couples are getting, he should pay half. If he receives the same as a couple he should pay the same.

And I agree, if he is not sure he should just ask.
  • Just be a really miserable beggar and give nothing at all. Say you don't want to participate in such fakery...you don't want anything from them, nor will you give anything. Bah humbug! Well, it is seasonal! ;)

Either that...or just try asking/communicating, if paying the £30 is a problem (as others have said). :D
  • Perhaps you could enjoy a joint party or trip away. The only people I spend decent amounts of money on for Birthdays or Christmas is my only nephew, my wife and my son. I think the days of getting big gifts tends to stop when you're an adult.

"I have a group of friends and all but one has a girlfriend. Everyone is turning 30 this year..."
Depends how you interpret everyone... if all of the men and all of their girlfriends are turning 30 this year, and the couples are all receiving 2 presents then just pay half. But I think its more likely that its just all the guys that are turning 30 and the girlfriends arent getting a present out of the arrangment. So I would say pay the £30. Some of the men are probably paying the £30 anyway and not expecting their girlfriend to contribute.

  • There is of course an easier way - birthday pressie worth £150 (4 couples 1 single = 9 people)divided by 9 = £16.67 (lets round up - buy a few sweets extra) each. Therefore a couple pay £33.34 each and the single person pays £16.67. Give them a per head cost. This is the way that most things work. Then how much you have to spend is dependant upon each individual paying (or the couple forking up if they both know the person).

The more I think about this, it is not really a 'moral' dilemma at all. The single person isn't being asked to pay £30/twice as much per head as the couples. He simply hasn't been told how much he should pay. Just ask for clarification and the dilemma goes away.
  • Pay the £30.
  • Pay £15. It's logical, and surely everyone would immediately understand the logic. It's not all to do with money. After all, you're all friends, right?
  • The single person shouldnt be punished just because they are single. I think it would be fine if they paid £15. like what people have said before, this could be solved easily if the friends just talked to each other.

Is it fair that a single person buys a present for each of their friends on their individual birthdays but when it comes to their birthday they receive a single present from the couple? Ive been a victim of this and also guilty of this in the past.
Single friend buys friend A present = £20
Single friend buys friend B present = £25

    A&B buy single friend a present = £20

    Fair or no?

It just seems to the be norm if your the single friend when all of your friends have paired off.
