My gullible sister just bought a laptop in PC World. She intended to spend around £400, she ended up buying a £500 Dell! She was pleased that she got a "free" Norton package thrown in (next to useless) and "free" Microsoft Office (as opposed to totally free OpenOffice) but she did look a little sheepish when I told her that she should have told them to stick their freebies and that she wanted 3 years free warranty instead. I also told her to check her bank account like a hawk in case they start charging for any "free" insurance packages that she may have signed up for ...."I do remember signing something but I think it was a sales voucher or whatever"
    Grrrrrrr.....

See this sort of post is over the top nonsense. So she spent £500 on a Dell, nothing completely wrong with that. Norton's isn't one of the leading security software programs cause it's rubbish. All security software programs have their fans and their haters. The last few reviews from the computing press, (including the long running respected mags such as Micro Mart and Computer Shopper) have rated Norton's software very highly, saying it is slick and has a great detection rate.

Open Office is great yes, but still does not beat having Microsoft office either.

As for any extra warranties, well all the paperwork should be with her as you get a copy before you leave the shop. Simply check it, if she has none then she shouldn't be charged.

So £500 for a Dell, with Norton's and with Microsoft Office, doesn't sound a complete no no for me.
  • in a loud voice, say 'NO THANKS', or maybe 'GET AWAY FROM ME, YOU PERVE!'..

that should send them scurrying away, and let others know whats going on..

they cant hassle in an empty shop!

You can't win as a salesman.
If you approach the customer then you are pestering. If you wait for them to ask you, then you are standing around and not helping.
If the customer disagrees with you, then obviously you are a fool. But it will be your fault when it comes back because you mis-sold it.

And by far the worst are the people like the poster above. They know best, they are argumentative and see problems everywhere.
I'm glad I left the job.

Not at all true. Approaching a customer as soon as they walk through the door is pestering. Waiting for the customer to get to the section of the shop they're looking at, giving them a few moments and then approaching them is not pestering.

I was recently went to DFS and as soon as I walked through the door I could see the eyes of the vultures staring at their next prey. It's rather quite hostile!
  • I'll be honest and say a pushy salesperson will definately put me off a sale not push me towards buying, therefore it somewhat defeats the object.

When will pushy salespeople realise that their actions more often than not actually deter people from buying things!

I went to PCW a few years ago, I wanted a laptop and was browsing and like above I got pounced on, I told the assistant I'll give you a shout if I want you etc.
I decided on the one I wanted then called him, he then tried to sell me extra cover, I told him I didn't want it but he kept on and on, then he called his boss to assist him in getting me to sign for extra cover, I said, "Don't I get one year free cover with this?" he said yes, so then I said, If I sign for the extra 3 years does that make it 4 years as I'm getting the first year free?" they said it didn't work like that, so I said, "So the first year free I end up paying for if I sign for 3 years?" they hummed and arrrd but still tried to sell it to me, I still refused and bought the laptop as it was.
Then on leaving my daughter looked at the receipt in the car and said, "Dad, he has charged you for the extra 3 year cover," I went straight back in and demanded to see the manager. He was suddenly out of the shop, I got hold of the sales rep who sold me the laptop and he said he would be with me in a minute, then he vanished, I waited over half an hour asking different assistants but funny how they all avoided me and were busy, then I saw the sales rep again and he again said he would be with me shortly and again he dissapeared.
I went to the customer service desk and in a loudish voice asked for the boss and why I wanted him so others could hear, after around another half hour or so I got a guy who asked what the problem was, after I explained he took to to a desk and gave me a new bill and re-reimburse my bank with the money they took at first.

Also when ever you do go to PCW look behind the customer service desk and see the stuff that has been returned faulty plus the queue there as well with people bringing stuff back.

I forgot to add, during the sale where they were trying to sell me extra cover I said, "Is this thing going to break after the one year free cover then is that why you are asking me to take the 3 year cover, if so I don't want it?"
They said it was for my own benifit to take the cover as things do breakdown etc.

I do agree, when it comes to customers in every business you certainly cannot please all of them.

I don't work in sales, but the amount of times in my job I have given 200% to do something and one person rains on your parade with a stupid ignorant comment.

As for sales people, the only time I don't like it is if they keep pushing after you say no thanks once or twice. After the second no it should be clear to any sales person that, that customer is not interested.

Of course many salespersons are under severe pressure to sell a certain amount of goods/cover/whatever.

I've had this a lot with car salesmen too, they pounce straight away and don't leave you alone, every car you look at is a good one and they tell you why you should buy it etc.
One of the best ones was a time I was looking at a car and the sales guy said, "Oh, are you thinking of buying that one only..." I said, Why what's wrong?" He said, "Well my mother wants that one and I was actually going to let her have it but seeing as you are looking I can't stop you but my mum will be upset, I'll have to find her another one."
He must have thought I would snatch his hand off seeing as he was giving he mother that one it must be good, any way in the end I decided to look elsewhere and I told him he could let his mum have the car now as I've decided against it.

A few months later I noticed the car was still there.
  • One word: Commission.

PC World salespeople haven't been paid commission on sales since about 2006.
It might be that although they don't get commission, they may well still have targets to meet which would explain why they are so pushy.

I once went to a shop and a guy approached me and said, "I won't pester you but if you want me or need help give me a shout," I did call him later and he was great, now if they all adopted this style and attitude people may buy more from them and even recommend.
