Variations of screen breakage are common (the deliberate splitting of a web page so that vital information is off-screen unless the page is fully scrolled.)
Scammers have used this trick for years, some rather more successfully than others. For example: though the authorities recently cracked down on phony EU Health Insurance Card issuers and closed down several of 'em, at least one is still trading and using the screen breakage technique to deceive: EU Healthcard.com.
If you go to its home page here:
http://www.eu-healthcard.com/?gclid=CIrG072MlqUCFcFH4wod3H04Sw
you'll see how the page has been purposely designed to mislead, because it's necessary to scroll down to reach the list of application options: By Post By Telephone Online.
The post and telephone options are there as a sop to the authorities in hope of avoiding prosecution, but the online option deceives nevertheless by deliberately excluding any mention of the official, free-to-use NHS EHIcard online service.
Having so constructed the page to make it necessary to scroll once, the page now appears to have reached its conclusion.
But the white space isn't white space at all, but screen breakage, so that only a second scrolling eventually yields the information:This website is not connected to or affiliated with the National Health Service, The Department of Health or any other official Government body. You can apply independently for EHIC by visiting the official NHS website.
Of course, having already scrolled once to reach what he / she thinks is the end of the page, a user may naturally think all the relevant information has been presented, and that the 'online option' costs £9.99p. Thus do they fall victim to the screen breakage scam.
(Hopefully, this particular con-trick website will also vanish soon and with it, the absurdly-named one-bloke-in-a-back-bedroom Universal Check Services.)
If this is the case it would explain a lot...and shut the smart !!!!!! up! interesting! Marc you don't partake in this devious behaviour do you? of course you don't!0 -
I think the problem and subsequent hostility comes down a complete unwillingness to accept responsibility.Sealed pot challange no: 3390

i think the main problem here is people actually using these services in the first place, of all the ways to get money thats not yours, payday loans weather through a broker or not, is the worst possible way to do it! just dont, you can never, in my opinion, need money that bad that waiting until your next pay is too long to wait.0

I think that PhylPho was meaning that the following information was not visible unless you scroll down a second time:PhylPho wrote:This website is not connected to or affiliated with the National Health Service, The Department of Health or any other official Government body. Although I could be wrong as their post isn't that clear and I made the same mistake as you when I first read it...My posts are my own opinions based on my experiences and info gathered from sites such as this.

I see what phylpho means there is a gap of about 8 - 10 lines between the online information and the bit about not connected or affliated.
There is no need for this gap at all.
When typing in EHIC into google, it's disapointing to see this website as the very top link.
The our service section does though make it clear, it is free elsewhere.0 -

Indeed especially when her line before that clearly statesyou'll see how the page has been purposely designed to mislead, because it's necessary to scroll down to reach the list of application options: By Post By Telephone Online.
Which is wrong too. So if they cant form a post correctly then they cant expect anything in return.
Especially when the online ordering claims to cost £9.99 in full view without scrolling and the PO and telephone one state its FREE you have to be one thick cookie to even consider paying for something when there are 2 free options.one of the famous 5

Hi Hax,
looks like a lot of misunderstandings can be caused by the wording used in mail and in documents..
re your screen shot... If I was reading it.. to me it suggests the one of membership would apply if I used the service. However if this person canceled the application within the 14 days that they allow for cancelation then this should have been refunded. .. how can you be a member of a service you decided not to take up?
If they had called it Admin fee then I guess they could make the argument for charging the money regardless of the application being cancled.....0 -

It states that the fee is charged when they present you with "your first lender and loan option". So, all they have to do, is take into account the information you've supplied, run it through their internal systems to find what they consider a "good match" and then give you the information relating to applying for a loan with the lender they have selected. Whether or not you even bother to log in and read the information they give you is irrelevant - they have upheld their side of the bargain. However if this person canceled the application within the 14 days that they allow for cancelation then this should have been refunded. .. how can you be a member of a service you decided not to take up?
I agree that any cancellation made within 14 days should be refunded as per their terms and conditions - this is just standard distance selling regulations (I think!). However, most of the people who complain probably haven't bothered to read the terms and conditions in the first place and are "unaware" of the charge made and so, are unlikely to have read the section about being entitled to a refund if they cancel within 14 days.
I don't disagree that wording can be misleading. However, in most cases, it's more likely that people are so blind with desperation for a loan that they don't bother reading what they're applying for or thinking about why they are entering their card details. My posts are my own opinions based on my experiences and info gathered from sites such as this.

Hi Annie McD
would be interested to see percentage of your applicants........ those who really only need quick fix for few days and can manage to repay before incurring big charges
and those who are already in vunrable postion, either due to unemployment, low wages, or mismanagement of money.. .. so along comes your company to help them by increasing their burden futher with astromical interest rates......0
